Waterbury, Conn. - The Post University women's basketball team scored the first ten points and never trailed, earning its first win of the season with a 70-65 win over the University of District Columbia on Tuesday night in the Drubner Center.
Senior
Lauren Chambers (Lebanon, Pa.) led the way for the Eagles with 17 points, including hitting 11 of 14 free throws.Â
The Eagles held UDC scoreless for the first 4:27 as junior
Taylor Ceballos (Milford, Conn.) scored six points during the opening, and decisive run.
Post ended the first quarter with a 19-9 lead and increased it to 11 entering the half at 32-21. Both teams were scoreless for the first 2:45 before a layup from Ceballos gave the Eagles a 21-9 lead. They led by as much as 13 in the half after a layup from junior
Mia Crooms (Bronx, N.Y.) with 5:57 remaining gave Post a 25-12 lead.
Ceballos finished with ten points in the first half.
A 16-9 run by UDC to open the third quarter capped by a three from Tyra Coombs with 4:20 left cut the Post lead to 41-37 before a 9-2 to finish the quarter gave Post a 50-39 lead. During the run, the Eagles scored seven of their points on free throws, five of them from Chambers.
The Eagles (1-3) took a 58-43 lead with 5:32 in the fourth, their biggest lead of the game and held off a UDC run towards the end which cut the lead to four at 69-65 with five seconds left.
Sha'raya Haines hit a free throw with a second left to seal the win.
Celballos finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman
Melanie Polanco (Meriden, Conn.) had 12 points and five rebounds and Crooms had 11 points and six rebounds.
Mia-Alexis Lloyd of UDC (2-3) led all scorers with 17.
Up next for the Eagles is a non-conference road game at Pace on November 25.
