Comeback Bid Falls Short For Post Softball in CACC Tournament

Eagles’ season ends with 9-7 loss to Holy Family

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The #8 Post University softball team scored in each of the last four innings but it was not enough as the Eagles fell to #2 Holy Family 9-7 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament on Saturday. Seniors Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) each had two RBI in the loss.

Holy Family took a 4-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single followed by a three-run homer by Rachael Zeides. Senior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) reached on an error by the Tigers' pitcher and came home to score on a base hit by Grzywna to cut the deficit to 4-1 in the fourth. Holy Family grabbed a run back in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back doubles.

Down 5-1 in the fifth, three of the first four Eagles drew walks to load the bases with just one out. Junior Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) drove in a run as she singled to left center. Freshman Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) scored on a passed ball and Kresley attempted to score but was tagged out at the plate.

Ragazzone followed with a base knock to trim the lead to 5-4 and force a pitching change. The Eagles continued to roll as freshman Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) beat out an infield single that hugged the first base foul line. Grzywna singled through the left side to tie the game 5-5. The Eagles were able to load the bases once again in the frame but were unable to take the lead.

Holy Family pulled in front once again in the bottom of the fifth. Koreen Orozco singled up the middle for one run and Samantha Klem launched a two-run pinch-hit homer to right center to make the score 8-5.

Post loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and were able to grab one run back as Ragazzone hit a sac fly allowing senior Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.), who reached on an infield single, to score. A two-out double by the Tigers made the score 9-6 heading into the final inning.

Grzywna smacked her third hit of the day to center to start the seventh. Senior Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) followed with a double off the wall in right field. After a groundout, Devorin walked to load the bases for the third straight inning. Owens grounded into a fielder's choice as Grzywna was forced out at home.

Down to the final out, Kresley drew a walk to make the score 9-7. Schaffer hit a hard grounder to third to end the game.

Grzywna was 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Schaffer also had two hits and an RBI.

The Eagles finish the season with a record of 19-27. Post scored its more runs in the CACC Tournament (17) since 2012.
