Game Recap: Baseball |

Walsh Hits Four Homers In Doubleheader Split With Merrimack

Lantana, Fla. – Junior Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with two homers and two doubles as the Post University baseball team took down Merrimack, 8-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday and followed it up with another two homers in a 19-5 game two loss.

As a team, the Eagles hit four homers.

Post got on the board in the second inning on a throwing error off the bat of freshman sophomore Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) that scored Walsh. Junior Luke Leonardi (Holbrook, N.Y.) would then follow with a double to score Walsh.

In the bottom of the third, the Eagles used the long ball to their advantage as senior Joey Picone (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and Walsh hit back-to-back solo homers off starter Browne to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.

The Eagles then ran PJ Browne from the game after a two-run homer from freshman Mike Grasso (Wyckoff, N.J.) made it a 6-0 game in the fourth inning.

As the balls were flying out of the park for the Eagles, sophomore Tyler Kovalewich (Colonia, N.J.) was shutting down the Merrimack offense early on before running into trouble in the fifth and sixth innings as he struck out nine in 5.1 innings.

Merrimack scored two runs in the fifth innings on an RBI single by DiScarcina and a sac fly from Hoalcraft. They would tack on two more in the sixth on a two-run homer by Mike Forgione to make a 6-4 Eagles lead.

However, Walsh would add enough insurance in the top of the seventh, blasting his second home run of the game to make it a 7-4 game. Sophomore John Cartagena, Jr. (Danbury, Conn.) would add an RBI single in the top of the eighth for the final run of the game.

Picone finished the game going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Cartagena, Jr. went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Leonardi was 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.

The Eagles finished with 14 hits, eight of them for extra bases.

In game two, the Eagles fell 19-5 as Walsh hit two more homers. He hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third and a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.

The Eagles were up 3-1 heading in to the 5th, but Merrimack scored six runs in the innings, followed by seven in the sixth and five runs in the seventh.

Walsh finished the game going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Cartagena was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Cam DiSarcina was 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBI for Merrimack. Matt Nicholson was 3-for-5 with four RBI.
