SHELTON, Conn. – The Post University men's ice hockey team was defeated at home by Assumption 5-2 on Tuesday night. Freshman
Anthony Giacomin (Drexel Hill, Pa.) scored the first goal of his career in the loss.
"We played alright in spurts tonight but did not put together a full 60 minutes. Assumption won the Northeast-10 last year and you can't play sporadically against a team like that and expect success," said head coach
Pete Whitney.
The first period of play was relatively even on both sides until a late penalty by the Eagles led to a barrage of shots by the Greyhounds. Freshman goaltender
Brandon Brown (Hanahan, S.C.) kept the game scoreless, making 14 saves in the period.
Assumption struck first with 6:55 to go in the second as Tommy Mahoney stuffed home a power play goal. Giacomin knotted the game 1-1 two minutes later with a power play score of his own. Unfortunately for Post, the Greyhounds quickly regained the lead just 21 seconds later and added another score to pull in front 3-1 through two.
The Greyhounds extended their advantage to three as Sam Kelly scored on a delayed penalty in the third. Sophomore
Matt Moreschi (Malden, Mass.) tallied his first goal of the year to make the score 4-2 with 3:12 to go. Assumption added an empty netter late.
Emotions were high for both teams all night as they combined for 66 penalty minutes. Shot were 51-32 in favor of the Greyhounds, but even at 14 apiece in the third. Brown finished with 46 saves.
The Eagles return to the ice on Friday night on the road at Worcester State. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
