Wilmington, De. – The Post University women's soccer team's season came to a heartbreaking end as it dropped a 2-1 game in overtime to Wilmington in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles – seeded seventh – were down 1-0 in the second half when freshman Fenna Maarse (Hilversum, Netherlands) took a pass from classmate Sabrina Adamo (Hicksville, N.Y.) on the right end line and took a shot at the near post to tie the game 1-1 in the 48th minute. It was the seventh goal of the season for Maarse.
Both teams would be stonewalled by their respective defenses the rest of the half. However, in overtime, a shot from Wilmington's Krysta Memis hit the crossbar, but found the foot of Carin Essex-Arline who put the game winner home in the 97th minute to give the Wildcats - seeded second – the win.
The Wildcats (13-5-1) got on the board early in the sixth minute as Memis scored on a pass from Loran Wyrough.
Junior Cailah Baranowski (Naugatuck, Conn.) had a remarkable day in net, stopping seven shots. Hope Wilson led all Eagles in shot attempts with three. Maarse had two.
Wrapping up the season
The Eagles finished their 2017 campaign 6-12 on the season and going 6-6 in the CACC. Senior Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) led the team in goals with eight. Maarse led the team in points with 18 (7 goals, 4 assists).
Wilson had five goals on the season, including an impressive hat trick in a 5-0 win over Concordia on September 20.
Defensively, the Eagles had two shutouts on the season, including the win over Concordia, Post also shutout Dominican on October 10, 1-0. Freshman Hannah Richards (Huddersfield, England) led the team in wins with three and in saves with 48.
