Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University women's basketball team held tough with the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's tough team, but fell to USciences, 65-42 on Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center.
Senior
Tyra Jones led the way for the Eagles in scoring with 11 points. Freshman
Taylor Ceballos (Milford, Conn.) had seven points and nine rebounds.
Post's defense held strong in the beginning of the first quarter, holding USciences scoreless for the first without a field goal until 5:32 remained in the first quarter.
The Eagles never trailed in the first quarter, outscoring the Devils 12-8. Jones scored four points during the quarter and junior
Sierra Green (Austin, Texas) hit a three.
Post (1-16, 1-8 CACC) and USciences (16-2, 9-1 CACC) swapped leads four times in the early going of the second quarter before outscoring the Eagles 7-0 over the last 7:16 of the quarter to lead 22-16 at halftime.
After trailing 26-18 with 8:09 left in the third, the Eagles went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to one point. Jones and classmate
Deaisia Acklin (Bronx, N.Y.) combined to go 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to go along with a three pointer by senior
Shontera Williams (Marksville, La.). A 14-3 run by USciences over the final 3:28 of the quarter - including a layup and free-throw with less than a second remaining by Sarah Abbonizio - gave the Devils a 42-30 lead heading into the fourth.
USciences was able to pull away in the final quarter for the win.
The Eagles outrebounded the Devils, 39-34 in the game. Acklin finished with six points and eight rebounds.
Alex Thomas led all players in scoring with 19 points for the Devils.
