Sprint Football Falls at Franklin Pierce 24-6 in Season Opener

Enriquez hits Sharp for only Eagles’ points

RINDGE, N.H. – The Post University sprint football team dropped its season-opener on Saturday night at Franklin Pierce 24-6 in the annual Talon Cup game. Freshman quarterback Buddy Enriquez (Sacramento, Calif.) threw for 136 yards and a touchdown in his debut.

Neither team was able to get anything going early as both Post and Franklin Pierce each punted on their first two possessions. The Ravens got on the board first late in the first quarter as Tyler Zech rushed in from eight yards out to take at 7-0 lead.

The Eagles used an eight-play 78-yard drive in the closing minutes of the first half to score their only points of the game. Post looked like it was going to go three and out, but a roughing the kicker penalty give the offense a second chance. Enriquez made the most of it as he hit senior Rocco Guerrera (Watertown, Conn.) for a 32-yard pass into Ravens' territory.

Senior Jarrick Sharp (Hampton, Va.) caught 27-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the deficit to 7-6. The ensuing extra point was blocked by Franklin Pierce.

The Ravens intercepted an Enriquez pass on the Eagles' second possession of the third quarter to take over on the Post two yard line. Five plays later they scored to extend their lead to 14-6.

The Eagles offense was unable to get anything going all night, but did hold Franklin Pierce to just 146 yards of offense. The difference was turnover as Post had two interceptions and two fumbles while the Ravens did not turn the ball over.

Guerrera grabbed three catches for 50 yards and Sharp pulled in five receptions for 49 yards. Sophomore Robert Sherry III (New Milford, Conn.) caught five passes for 22 yards.

Seniors Greg Volpe (North Haven, Conn.) and Chris Leggio (Brewster, N.Y.) led the team with 10 tackles each. Volpe added three tackles for loss and one sack. Freshman Brad Grasso (Wolcott, Conn.) had nine tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.

Post looks to get back on track on Friday, Sept. 30 against at Navy. Kickoff in Annapolis is set for 7 p.m.
