WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team was defeated 5-2 by Dominican in nine innings on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to darkness and will be made up at a later date.
Post loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning but could not push across an early run. Dominican pulled ahead 1-0 in third after Emily Luzetsky led off the inning with a ground-rule double and came into score on an error.
Sophomore
Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.) crushed a double to centerfield in the fourth inning to bring in the first Eagles' run and tie the game 1-1. The Chargers leadoff batter in the fifth reached on an error and eventually came home to put Dominican ahead 2-1.
The Eagles nearly tied the game in the sixth as junior Kate Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) doubled to right center to start the frame. Classmate
Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) reached on a bunt single and advanced to second with no outs. A fly ball by McDonald was not able to score the runner from third and the next two Eagles grounded out to end the threat.
Senior
Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) got the Eagles started in the bottom of the seventh with a ground-rule double to left. She advanced to third and came in to score the tying run as sophomore
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) grounded out.
Post put runners on second and third with one out in the eighth after Dawson and junior
Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) each had base hits. Both were stranded when a popup ended the inning.
Ariana Trembone doubled in the go-ahead run in the ninth. Shannon Haukap pushed across two more for Dominican with a single up the middle.
Schaffer drew a two-out walk for Post in the home half of the ninth as the Eagles stranded two runners in the final inning.
Senior
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) threw all nine innings for Post and struck out eight.
Post returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader at New Haven. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
