ITHACA, N.Y. – The Post University sprint football team scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but could not mount a comeback as it fell 27-13 at Cornell on Friday night. Freshman quarterback
Sayvon Willis (Wilmington, Del.) threw for 229 yards and a score in his first start of the season.
Post went three-and-out on its first possession of the game but recovered a fumble on the first Cornell drive as freshman
Brad Grasso (Wolcott, Conn.) forced a loose ball after a long pass. The Big Red looked to be in business on their next drive as Will Griffen returned a punt 34 yards deep into Post territory. The Eagles' defense came up big once again as senior
Fabian Santa Cruz (Vista, Calif.) forced his third fumble of the year.
The Eagles were still unable to get their offense going and punted again. Cornell used seven plays to get down to the Post nine yard line, but missed a 26-yard field goal to keep the game scoreless after a quarter. The Big Red scored a touchdown in the final seconds of the first half to take a 6-0 lead into the break.
Post found itself down 20-0 as Cornell scored touchdowns on each of its drives in the third quarter. Late in the third, Willis scrambled for 22 yards as the Eagles drove down to the opponents' 35-yard line. Faced with a fourth down to start the final quarter, Post was unable to convert and turned the ball over the Cornell.
The Eagles defense stood strong on its next opportunity forcing a turnover on downs. Senior
Tylik Lawson (Berlin, Md.) and junior
Eleodoro Perez (Chino, Calif.) stopped Big Red running back Eric Brown for an eight-yard loss on fourth down to give Post the ball on the Cornell 31-yard line.
On the next play from scrimmage, Willis hit senior
Rocco Guerrera (Watertown, Conn.) for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 20-6 with 12:34 remaining in the game. Cornell answered with a score of its own to extend its lead to 27-6.
Post came up empty on a 13-play drive as Willis completed five passes for 59 yards to get the Eagles down into the red zone with 4:32 left. After a punt, Willis capped another long drive with a one-yard touchdown run in the final seconds. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Cornell to end the comeback.
Guerrera caught six passes for a game-high 97 yards. Sharp hauled in five passes for 46 yards. Lawson made nine tackles, including two sacks. Senior
Chris Leggio (Brewster, N.Y.) had eight solo tackles and nine total. Grasso forced two fumbles, recovered one, and made five stops.
The Eagles visit Mansfield on Saturday, Oct. 29 in their final road game of the year. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
