Lakewood, N.J. - Junior Tyra Jones (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 22 points - including 13 in the fourth quarter - to lead four Eagles in double figures as the Post University women's basketball team won its first game of the season, defeating Georgian Court, 82-72 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
The win also marked the first career head coaching win for Taj McWilliams-Franklin.
The Eagles outscored the Lions 35-17 in the fourth quarter to help them overcome an eight point deficit entering the frame.
Jones opened up the fourth quarter scoring four straight points to cut the deficit to 55-51 before Georgian Court's Jaelyn Tweedy hit a three-pointer to make it a seven point lead for the Lions with 8:57 remaining.
Post clawed back with a 13-6 run over the next 4:08 to tie the game on a layup from Sims. During the run, Jones scored six points during the stretch and sophomore Toni Deren (Greenlawn, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer. After the Lions went up 68-64 after making four straight free throws, back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Gabriela Middleton (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Deren gave the Eagles a 70-68 lead.
The Lions would tie it up one more time at 70-70 before a layup from Middleton at 2:37 sparked a 12-2 run to end the game. The Eagles helped themselves out at the free-throw line, going 6-for-8 down the stretch from the line.
In the first quarter, the Lions jumped out to a 10-2 lead and led 23-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Post stormed back in the second quarter, holding the Lions to 3-for-19 shooting from the field. Junior Jessica Ayala (Middletown, N.Y.) scored six points in the quarter, including a three-pointer. A layup from sophomore Lexus Childs-Harris (New London, Conn.) with three seconds left tied the game, 29-29 going into the half.
Coming out of the gate in the second half the teams exchanged leads six times over the first five minutes, as junior Dericka Sims (Chesapeake, Va.) took charge with six points in the first five minutes for the Eagles. Georgian Court would eventually take the lead for good in the quarter at the 4:43 mark and go into the fourth quarter with a 55-47 lead. Sims scored eight of her 12 points in the quarter.
The Eagles bench dominated Georgian Court's, 45-22.
Deren finished with 10 points for the Eagles and Middleton finished with 12. Childs-Harris scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds. Ayala finished with seven points.
Jada Atchison led the Lions in scoring with 21 points. Tweedy scored 20.
