Waterbury, Conn. - Junior Jovan Kingwood (Norwich, Conn.) had another stellar outing, scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Post University women's basketball team fell just short in a 65-60 loss to Saint Michael's in an out-of-conference game Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles, who trailed by as many as 15 points early on, and by seven going into the fourth quarter, got to within two points on two separate occasions in the fourth quarter.
Post was down 16-2 with 1:45 remaining in the first quarter, but finished with a furious 6-0 run on a layup from sophomore Emily McCann (gold Coast, Australia), a jumper by Kingwood and a layup right before the buzzer from sophomore Lexus Childs-Harris (New London, Conn.).
Saint Michael's increased its lead to 13 points at 27-13 in the second quarter after a three-pointer from Megan Gaudreau with 6:23 remaining in the quarter. Again, the Eagles would go on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to four points. Sophomore Jeshanah Martinez (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored four straight points during the run to pace the Eagles. St. Michael's, however, would close out on a 6-0 run to end the half and lead 33-23.
In the third, Saint Michael's went up by 15 at 44-29 on a layup from Emily Ferreri with 5:38 left in the quarter. Post would close out on a 14-6 run to get within striking distance in the fourth.
After Saint Michael's opened up with a layup, a layup from Childs-Harris and a three-pointer from Kingwood to cut the deficit to 52-48 at the 8:06 mark. The team's went back and forth for the next five minutes before McCann's layup, made it a 61-59 game. After the teams exchanged free-throws, the Eagles had a chance to tie the game up with less than a minute, but couldn't convert. Saint Michael's was able to make free-throws down the stretch to seal the game.
Childs-Harris finished with 10 points. Junior Nicole Sheloski (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) scored seven points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Eagles.
Makenzie Burud led Saint Michael's (7-8) with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Leah Spencer scored 16.
Up next for the Eagles (0-17) is a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference home game against Philadelphia on Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
