WATERBURY, Conn. – Sophomore
Kyle Shannon (Stanhope, N.J.) scored his second goal of the game with 3:18 left to give the Post University men's lacrosse team an 8-7 victory over Chestnut Hill at LaMoy Field on Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Eagles victories over both Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schools this year as they also defeated Dominican.
In the game's final minutes, freshman
Frank Nichols Jr. (Oceanside, Calif.) grabbed a ground ball off a turnover by the Griffins and assisted on the winning goal. After the score Post played tremendous defense, forcing four turnovers, and senior
Anthony DeRosa (Toms River, N.J.) made an acrobatic save to secure the win.
After falling behind 1-0 early, the Eagles closed the first quarter with four straight goals. Sophomore
Trevor Buchas (Bristol, Conn.) had two goals while juniors
Colby Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and
Chris Lommer (Lancaster, N.Y.) each had one.
Treat scored his second to start the next quarter and give Post its largest lead of the game at 5-1. Chestnut Hill stormed back with four goals in the rest of the period to the Eagles' one to make the score 6-5 at the break.
The Griffins would tie the score in the third, but sophomore
Luke McDermott (New Milford, Conn.) would give Post a 7-6 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.
A penalty by Post would give Chestnut Hill a man-up opportunity with 12:38 remaining. The Griffins took advantage and tied the score 7-7. The Eagles killed off a one minute penalty midway through the quarter and stout defense helped them preserve the tie until Shannon's winner.
DeRosa made a season-high 18 saves and had an impressive .750 save percentage in his final game at LaMoy. Senior
Matt Edwin (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman
Mike Brumber (Hicksville, N.Y.) each had three caused turnovers. Juniors
Shane McKay (Hempstead, N.Y.) and
Alsharif Blackman (Easton, Pa.) picked up four ground balls each.
With a 6-8 record in the regular season over, the Eagles now wait to see if they are invited to the ECAC Tournament.
