Eagles Suffer Defeat to Wilmington

Post 16-8 in CACC

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Post University softball team was defeated in both games of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 24 against Wilmington University for the first time all season. The Eagles were shutout in both games despite a solid pitching performance in game two. Post now ranks fourth in the CACC standings with a 16-8 conference record, and 22-16 overall.

Game One – Wilmington 6, Post 0
Senior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) got the start in the circle for the Eagles in game one. Derby pitched 4.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

First-year Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) made an appearance out of the bullpen and tossed 3.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits.

Post looked to be threatening in the first inning with a pair of back-to-back singles by junior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) and Schaffer, but it was to no avail as the Wildcats' starter Brooke Lachette (Aldan, Pa.) dealt two strikeouts to end the inning.

Wilmington reached on a hit batsman to lead off the second inning. After the runner advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, the Wildcat's tripled to score the runner and jump out to an early 1-0 advantage.

The Wildcats posted two runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI double. The defending CACC champions pushed three more across in the sixth on a two-RBI single and a Post fielding error.

The Post offense collected five hits in the game, but was unable to come up with a timely knock to deliver a run. Sophomore Natalie Lennox (Landenberg, Pa.) recorded two hits in the game.

Wilmington's Lachette went the distance and improved to 11-6 on the season. Derby now stands at 8-5.

Game Two – Wilmington 1, Post 0
The second of the two-game set had the makings of a pitchers' duel. Junior Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) got the nod for the Eagles and allowed just one run over nine hits. Esque struck out seven, improving on her impressive 7.69 strikeout-to-walk ratio (K/BB). She also remains atop the CACC with a 0.96 earned run average.

On the other side, the Wilmington starter Chelsea Botsch (Smyrna, Del.) allowed just one base runner over 7.0 shutout innings of work.

The only run of the game came with two outs in the third inning. The Wildcat's reached on a fielder's choice and moved the runner into scoring position. Junior Ashley Bennett (Laurel, Del.) served a single to center field to score the run, a feat that was hard to come by.

Lennox collected the only Eagle hit in the game on a single down the left field line in the fourth inning.

Esque showed perseverance in working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning to give her team a chance, however, Post was not able to get it done in the batter's box.

Wilmington's Botsch earned her conference-leading 14th win of the season, as Esque fell to 9-5.

On Deck: The action continues on Saturday, Apr. 25 when the Eagles round out the regular season against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Pa. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
