Schaffer Sharp as Eagles Take Two

Post Sweep Saint Rose

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team swept the College of Saint Rose in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 31. The Eagles now stand 9-9 on the season, and remain 3-1 in conference play.

Game One – Post 3, Saint Rose 2
Sophomore Karoline Prevost (Fall River, Mass.) got the start in the circle for the Eagles in game one of the doubleheader. Prevost lasted 2.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.

First-year Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) came on in relief and tossed 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one base runner.

The left side of the Eagle defense was engaged in game one. Shortstop Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) recorded four assists and Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) had five at the hot-corner.

Post pushed one across in the first inning when first-year Nicole Venturini (Scituate, R.I.) scored on an error by the Saint Rose third baseman. The Golden Knights took the lead in the top-half of the third inning by capitalizing on an Eagle miscue in the field and a RBI single courtesy of Tina Karaqi (Thornwood, N.Y.).

Post would get one back in the bottom-half of the inning when Kresley served a two-out RBI single to right field to score first-year Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.).

McDonald set things up for the Eagles in the fifth with a one-out double to left field. Venturini scored McDonald with a clutch RBI single to right center to give Post a 3-2 advantage.

Schaffer kept the Saint Rose bats at bay and retired the final six batters to secure the win for post and pick up her third win of the season. Saint Rose's Renee Vaiano (Massapequa, N.Y.) was attributed the loss and falls to 2-4 on the season.

Game Two – Post 6, Saint Rose 1
Senior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) got the start for the Eagles in game two and threw four innings of one-run softball, allowed seven hits, and struck out two on her way to earn her third win of the season.

Schaffer came out of the bullpen once again for Post in the fifth and notched her first save of the year. In a combined performance, the first-year only allowed two hits in 7.2 innings of work.

The Eagles struck first in the bottom-half of the second inning scoring three runs on one hit and three walks. Sophomore Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) sprayed a RBI single to left field and Schaffer worked a walk with the bases loaded.

Post escaped damage in the third when the centerfielder McDonald threw out a base runner at home. Saint Rose would get one in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single by Taylor Snyder (Saugertles, N.Y.).

The home team opened it up in the sixth inning tacking on three more runs on three hits. Sophomore Kathryn Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) drove in one and McDonald came through with a bases loaded two-RBI single through the right side.

Saint Rose outhit Post eight to six in the second game, but the Eagle defense managed to work out of trouble when it mattered most. Saint Rose's Ashlee Frazier (Mayfield, N.Y.) was named the losing pitcher and falls to 0-1.

On Deck: The action continues Wednesday, Apr. 1 when the Eagles play host to the Cougars of Caldwell University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
