Eagles’ Bats Quiet In Doubleheader Defeat

Post Suffers Losses To Saint Anselm and Grand Valley State

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Post University softball team suffered two losses in another NTS Spring Game doubleheader on Tuesday, March 3. The Eagles were defeated by Saint Anslem College 9-1 in six innings, and by Grand Valley State University 6-0. Post drops to 2-4 thus far in Clermont.

Game One- Saint Anselm 9, Post 1 (F/6)
Sophomore Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) and first-year Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) both had two-hit games, Schaffer with the only Eagle RBI.

Schaffer was the game-one starter for the Eagles and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits. Sophomore Karoline Prevost (Fall River, Mass.) appeared in relief, recorded two outs, and gave up three earned runs on four hits. Schaffer (0-1) was credited with the loss.

Post came out swinging and took an early first-inning lead when Shaffer singled through the right side to score Owens. Saint Anselm's Hannah Byrne (Lynn, Mass.) fired back with a RBI single of her own in the bottom half of the first to even the score.

A couple of one, two, three innings for both sides took us to the fourth inning where Post threated with the bases loaded, but would not capitalize. The Hawks pushed five across in the fifth with two RBI singles. First-year Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.) flashed her glove and stopped the bleeding with an assist from center field when she gunned down a runner at home for the third out of the inning.

Saint Anselm's Megan Murrell connected for a three-run homer in the sixth to bring the eight-run mercy rule into effect. Post fell 9-1 in six innings.

Game Two- Grand Valley State 6, Post 0
Grand Valley's Courtney Reinhold (Saginaw, Mich.) was dealing from the circle in today's game. Post managed five hits and left seven runners stranded. Reinhold pitched seven complete innings and improved to 3-0 on the season. Senior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) suffered her second loss of the season (1-2) when she gave up four runs, two earned, in the top half of the sixth inning. Junior Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.)came on in relief and retired six batters, giving up two unearned runs.

McDonald showed off her arm to end the second inning when she gunned down Laker Kaylie Rhynard (Shepherd, Mich.) trying to advance to third. The Lakers exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth smacking three singles, a double, and a triple. Grand Valley tacked on another run resulting from two Eagle errors in the seventh. Post couldn't find the timely hitting in the latter two innings of the game and dropped their second of the day 6-0.

On Deck: The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, March 4 with a doubleheader against University of Mary at 1 p.m. and Lynn University at 3 p.m.
