Eagles Top American International In Home Opener

Post Defeats American International

WATERBURY, Conn. - The Post University softball team defeated American International College in both games of the afternoon doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 24.

Game One – Post 7, American International 4
Senior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) was the game one starter for the Eagles and lasted 2.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned). First-year Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) came on in relief and pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, fanning four Yellow Jackets in the process.

Sophomore Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) beat out an infield single to open the bottom half of the first; she would eventually score when sophomore Jessica Grzywna (Philadelphia, Pa.) walked with the bases loaded. AIC evened the score in the second inning at the cost of two Eagle miscues on defense. Despite striking out the side in the first two innings, AIC pitcher Alyssa Camargo (Covina, Calif.) walked in another runner with the bases loaded in the second inning to give Post the 2-1 advantage.

AIC posted three runs in the third frame and Post answered with two with RBI-singles from junior Kaitlin Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) and Owens. The Eagles broke open the tie score with three runs in the sixth inning, capitalizing on two AIC errors. Both first-year Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.) and Owens collected three hits in the game and junior Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) delivered two RBIs. Schaffer was credited with her first win of the season and improves to 1-2 on the season. AIC's Jillian Bedard (Meriden, Conn.) was named the losing pitcher.

Game Two – Post 3, American International 2
Junior Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) picked up her second win of the season in a complete game performance in the second half of the double header. Esque allowed two runs over seven hits and struck out seven. Esque managed to hit her spots in the lower half of the strike zone, and recorded 10 ground ball outs.

Kresley connected for a solo shot to deep left-center field in the bottom half of the second inning to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Post struck again in the fourth inning when Kresley scored from third on a bases-loaded wild pitch. Sophomore Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass.) drove in the second run of the inning on a chopper to the shortstop.

Esque worked herself in and out of trouble in the sixth, giving up three hits and back-to-back doubles. The Yellow Jackets scored twice but the Eagles managed to stop the bleeding and outlast a late inning rally to complete the doubleheader sweep. Post improves to 4-8 on the season and AIC drops to 1-9.

On Deck: The Eagles will play host to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Dominican College on Friday, Mar. 27 at Lamoy Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
