History
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Post University softball team started its 2015 campaign Sunday by dropping both games in a doubleheader. The Eagles were defeated 9-3 by Assumption College and fell short in extras 10-5 to Walsh University (Ohio) as part of the NTA Spring Games.
Game One- Assumption 9, Post 3 Sophomore
Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa.) had herself a three-hit game and scored one run. First-year
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) also collected three hits and added to the cause with an RBI. Shaffer pitched 3.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits. Senior
Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) was credited with the loss allowing five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. Derby recorded three strikeouts in her effort.
Post opened up the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning with RBI singles from first-year
Korie McDonald (Middleboro, Mass.) and Shaffer. Assumption answered by posting a five spot in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles tacked on another run after sophomore
Kathryn Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) knocked one over the left centerfield fence. The Assumption offense broke open the game with a four-run fourth inning. The Eagles collected 10 hits on the afternoon and left seven on base in the 9-3 loss.
Game Two- Walsh 10, Post 5 (F/8) Shaffer recorded another multi-hit game and also scored a run. First-year
Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.) recorded two RBIs in the game. Junior
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) and sophomore
Karoline Prevost (Fall River, Mass.) put together a solid pitching performance, each tossing four innings. Esque allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out three. Prevost gave up just one earned run over three hits, but was credited with the loss.
Both teams traded runs in the first, but Walsh pulled away scoring twice in the second inning and once more in the third. In the fourth inning, Selimovski dropped a two RBI single into left field and gave the Eagles life again. Post pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as first-years
Amanda Ely (Pittsfield, Mass.) and
Nicole Venturini (Scituate, R.I.) crossed the plate on an error committed by the pitcher to even the score at five apiece.
The errors were costly for the Eagles in extra-innings as Walsh scored five unearned runs off of Prevost in the top half of the eighth. There was nothing doing for Eagles in the bottom of the inning and they fell 10-5. Post will look ahead to its remaining eight games in Clermont.
On Deck: The Eagles are back in action on Monday, Mar. 2 with a doubleheader against Lake Erie College at 1 p.m. and Southern Wesleyan University (S.C.) at 3 p.m.
