Eagles Unable To Complete Comeback Against Nyack

Three Finish In Double-Figures Led By Mareno’s 18

WATERBURY, Conn. – A three-point attempt by freshman Tyler Desrosiers (Agawam, Mass.) fell short in the final seconds as the Post University men's basketball team fell to Nyack 83-77 at home on Wednesday night. The Eagles now sit at 9-11 overall and 8-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with just over two weeks left in the season.

Post found itself down 58-38 with 10:31 left in the game after a free-throw by Nyack. After a Warriors' turnover freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) hit two free-throws to spark a 7-0 run by the Eagles. Senior Nardie Bogues (Baltimore, Md.) made a jumper in the lane and found freshman Malik Howze (Detroit, Mich.) next time down the floor for a three that cut the deficit to 58-45 with 8:52 left.

The Eagles continued to chip away at the lead. With 7:18 left, Bogues stripped Ezra Gaines and hit junior Brandt Voiles (Byron, Ill.) down the floor for an easy layup the brought Post within single digits at 60-52 for the first time since the first half.

Down 10 with about four minutes left, Nyack's Will Robinson made a layup and was fouled, but was called for a technical. Robinson missed his free-throw, but Bogues made both for Post to make the score 67-59. Desrosiers nailed a three from the top of the key on the Eagles' ensuing possession as the crowd at Drubner began to get into it.

The teams traded baskets on their next possessions and with 3:06 left Desrosiers hit another from distance to make it a one-possession game at 70-67. He led the Eagles with eight points off the bench. Nyack went back up by six and after a Post jumper, Mareno made an emphatic block on Robinson and hit one of two free-throws on the other end to cut the deficit back to three with 1:27 remaining.

Junior David Seymour (Amityville, N.Y.) made a layup with 25 ticks left to make the score 79-77. The Warriors made one of two free-throws and Post gained possession with just eight seconds remaining. Desrosiers shot to tie the game fell short and Nyack escaped with the victory.

Nyack was 6-for-12 from distance in the first half as it jumped in front by as many as 16 points. Voiles hit a three-pointer with 1:15 left in the first to bring Post within 10. The Warriors held a 42-30 lead at the break. Post trailed by just nine early in the second before a 9-0 Nyack run made the score 54-36.

Mareno posted his second straight double-double with a team-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. Bogues added 13 points and five assists. Freshman Joseph Lockwood (London, England) was 7-for-11 from the line and finished with nine points and seven boards.

The Eagles held a 47-43 advantage on the glass including a 31-22 margin in the second half.

Post will try to postpone history on Saturday, Feb. 7 as it visits Philadelphia. Rams' coach Herb Magee comes into the game with 999 career victories. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
