Post Beats Mercy To Win ECAC Title, 2-0

Two Late Goals The Difference

Waterbury, Conn. - The Post University women's soccer team defeated Mercy, 2-0 to win the Eastern College Athletic Conference title Sunday afternoon at LaMoy Field. for the first time in school history.

After a scoreless first half, the Eagles took advantage of a penalty as sophomore Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) put home a goal on a free kick in the 84th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

In the 89th minute, sophomore Sam Rodriguez (Wayne, N.J.) took advantage of an out of place Ashley Price in goal and put home the easy goal. Rodriguez, who had three goals in the ECAC tournament, was named MVP.

Senior Brittany Carroll (Plainville, Conn.) was phenomenal in goal, stopping seven shots on the day for the win, including a big stop on a shot from Lauren Calderaro in the 88th minute, shortly before the goal from Rodriguez.

Coach Matt Micros was thrilled with the win.

"It was a great weekend," Micros said. "The girls played incredible. Sam Rodriguez earned MVP and several players played injured. They were warriors. Couldn't be prouder of the girls and happier for the entire team, especially the seniors. Brittany and Lexxi Carroll (Plainville, Conn.), Misty Kaiwi (Waipahu, Hawaii), and Valerie Moore (Bloomfield, Conn.) And we wouldnt have been there without Laura Morgan (Brush Prairie, Wash.) and Brianne Scott, who were both injured."

"It was a terrific team to coach. They worked extremely hard all year, and always managed to rebound from any disappointments. We set a goal this year to challenge for the conference title, but even more importtantly to compete outside the conference. It was a great season for the program to build on. Couldn't be prouder of the girls."

Mercy outshot the Eagles, 14-6.

Post finished the season 11-6-2.
