WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University sprint football team was defeated by Navy 21-0 at LaMoy Field on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Eleodoro Perez (Chino, Calif.) finished with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Things did not start of well for the Eagles as Navy intercepted a pass on the opening drive and returned it for a 39-yard score to jump ahead 7-0.
Post drove into Navy territory on its next drive. Junior
Greg Volpe (North Haven, Conn.) hit senior
Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) for a 16-yard pass on a third down to help extend the drive. The Eagles were stopped at the opposing 43-yard line and forced to punt. A bad snap over the head of the punter gave the Midshipmen the ball on Post's 27-yard line to start their next drive.
Navy running back Eric Wellmon mishandled a handoff two plays in and junior
Fabian Santa Cruz (Vista, Calif.) recovered the fumble to give the Eagles the ball. Unfortunately, Post was forced to punt on its next possession and Navy drove 80 yards on eight plays from there to go ahead 14-0 late in the first.
Perez forced another Midshipmen fumble early in the second quarter as Post took over on its own 31-yard line. Freshman
Malcolm Ware (Sutherlin, Va.) caught a 13-yard pass to convert on a third-and-10, but the Eagles were once again forced to punt.
Post's best drive of the game came midway through the second as they took the ball from their own 28 deep into Navy territory. Volpe hit Mahan and sophomore
Trevon Haynes (Glen Burnie, Md.) for passes of 12 and 11 yards. Ware also had a 13-yard run to keep the Eagles going. Post attempted a 34-yard field goal to end the drive, but it was off target.
The Eagles stopped Navy on fourth down to start the second half, but were unable to get anything going. The Midshipmen scored their final points of the day after Corey Garcia returned a punt down to the Post one-yard line and Wellmon ran it in.
Post forced its third fumble of the day in the fourth quarter and freshman
Demonte Sanders (Chicago, Ill.) recovered for the Eagles.
Volpe finished with 104 yards through the air. Mahan caught five balls for 43 yards. Junior
Chris Leggio (Brewster, N.Y.) made 10 tackles and is now just two away from become Post's all-time leader in the category. Ware finished with 41 yards on the ground.
The Eagles visit Mansfield on Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
