PREVIEW: Eagles Host Concordia In Battle For First Place

Post, Concordia, and Dominican Tied For First in CACC North

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball returns home on Tuesday to host Concordia in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) clash at the Drubner Center at 7:30 p.m. Both teams are tied atop the North Division with conference records of 5-2. The Eagles defeated the Clippers 81-65 in November and has won three straight in the series.
 
Last Time Out: Post 67, Caldwell 54 – Recap | Box Score
The Eagles used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to defeat the Cougars on the road last Wednesday. Post started slow as it turned the ball over four times early and Caldwell built a 12-2 lead. Junior David Seymour (Amityville, N.Y.) made two straight baskets for Post. After a miss by the Cougars, freshman Tyler Desrosiers (Agawam, Mass.) hit from distance to give the Eagles their first lead of the night at 18-16 with 5:12 left. Caldwell pulled back in front and led 24-23 at the half.
 
The teams traded baskets early in the second half until a three-point play by freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) gave the Post the lead for good with 13:47 remaining in the game. Mareno scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. Seymour hit a three of a dish from senior Nardie Bogues (Baltimore, Md.) to spark the run for Post that put the game away. The Eagles led by as many as 15 points before it was all over.
 
Scouting the Clippers
After starting the season 1-6, Concordia has won seven of its last eight games including five in a row in CACC play. Peter Aguilar leads the team at 15.6 points per game and is coming off a season-high 26 points last time out. Tshyrad Oates is fifth in the CACC with 8.4 rebounds per game. The Clippers lead the conference with 8.2 steals per game and are fifth in three-point percentage at 32.3 percent.
 
All-Time Record vs. Concordia
The Eagles are 9-4 against the Clippers all-time and has won five of the last six games. Post last lost against Concordia at home in 2011. The Eagles outscored the Clippers 42-20 in the second half to earn an 81-65 win in their first meeting this year. Matt Mareno led the team with 28 points and 14 rebounds.

Hitting the Glass
This season Post has outrebounded its opponents in all but four games this season is third in the CACC with 38.5 rebounds per game, including a season-high 48 in its victory over Concordia. The Eagles have hit the offensive glass hard, holding a 166-145 advantage over its opponents this year. Post's offensive rebound average of 14.18 per game is good for 32nd in Division II. The Eagles have grabbed a season-high 21 offensive boards twice in games against Daemen and Concordia.
 
Limiting Giveaways
Post is 30th nationally, averaging just 11.4 turnovers per game. The Eagles have had less or the same amount of turnovers than their opponents in all but two games this season. In three games this year, Post has committed less than 10 turnovers, with a season-low of seven coming in the opener against Roberts Wesleyan.
 
Mareno Piling Up Weekly Honors
Freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) has been named CACC Rookie of the Week on three times this season and ECAC Rookie of the Week twice. Mareno leads the team at 13.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. He has also posted four double-doubles this year.
 
Starting From Scratch
The Eagles return just one player from a year ago in sophomore Rokas Lapsys (Vilnius, Lithuania). Lapsys who appeared in just three games, averaging 9.3 minutes per outing. This year's roster features 13 players including six freshman, two sophomores, four juniors, and one senior. The players come from all over the globe with two from England in freshmen Kyle Squire (Cheshire, England) and Joseph Lockwood (London, England) and one from Australia, junior Shannon McCready (Melbourne, Australia) and Lithuania.
 
Preseason Poll
Post was picked to finish fifth in the CACC North Division this year. The Eagles received 41 votes. Bloomfield and Philadelphia were selected to finish first in the North and South Divisions, respectively.
 
On the Horizon
Post continues CACC play as it visits Nyack on Saturday, Jan. 17. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
