PREVIEW: Men’s Basketball Visits In-State Rival New Haven Tuesday

Eagles Make Only Road Trip of the Month

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team visits New Haven on Tuesday, Dec. 9 in a non-conference tilt. The trip to West Haven is the Eagles' only road game of the month. Post has defeated the Chargers in the only other two meetings between the two squads.

The Eagles struggled to find their shot early as the Wildcats jumped in front 10-2. Freshman Tyler Desrosiers (Agawam, Mass.) hit from distance and classmate Joseph Lockwood (London, England) nailed a layup to cut the deficit to three midway through the first half.
 
Wilmington jumped out to their largest lead of the first half with a 9-0 run to pull in front 23-11 with 6:59 left. Lockwood hit a three off a dish from senior Nardie Bogues (Baltimore, Md.) to cap an 11-2 Post run and cut the lead to 24-21, but the Wildcats extended their advantage to 32-25 at the half.
 
A 17-2 run to open the second half put the game away for the visitors as Wilmington led 49-27. Bogues hit two shots from long range and the Eagles forced turnovers on four straight possessions as part of a 19-3 stretch that trimmed the lead to single-digits at 58-49. The Wildcats quickly jumped back in front by 16 and to end the comeback bid.
 
Scouting the Chargers
New Haven is 4-2 on the season and has won three straight games heading into Tuesday's matchup. Last time out the Chargers defeated Adelphi 71-56 to improve to 2-2 in the Northeast-10. Eric Anderson leads the team with 16.2 points and 14.2 rebounds per game. His rebounding average is tops in Division II. The Chargers are 14th in the country, allowing just 60.2 points per game and hold opponents to just a 38.3 shooting percentage.
 
All-Time Record vs. New Haven
The Eagles are 2-0 against the Chargers dating back to 2007. The teams have not met in five years when Post defeated New Haven 50-45 on the road in 2009.

Hitting the Glass
This season Post has outrebounded its opponents in all but two games this season is second in the CACC with 41.6 rebounds per game, including a season-high 48 in its victory over Concordia. The Eagles have hit the offensive glass hard, holding a 114-79 advantage over its opponents this year. Post's offensive rebound average of 16.17 per game is good for 13th in Division II. The Eagles have grabbed a season-high 21 offensive boards twice in games against Daemen and Concordia. 
 
Limiting Giveaways
Post is 13th nationally, averaging just 10.0 turnovers per game. The Eagles have had less or the same amount of turnovers than their opponents in all but one game this season. In three games this year, Post has committed less than 10 turnovers, with a season-low of seven coming in the opener against Roberts Wesleyan.
 
Mareno Piling Up Weekly Honors
Freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) was named CACC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 1 for the second consecutive week. The freshman led the team with 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks in the victory over Stonehill. This season Mareno leads the team and is near the top of the conference with 15.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
 
Starting From Scratch
The Eagles return just one player from a year ago in sophomore Rokas Lapsys (Vilnius, Lithuania). Lapsys appeared in just three games, averaging 9.3 minutes per outing. This year's roster features 13 players including six freshman, two sophomores, four juniors, and one senior. The players come from all over the globe with two from England in freshmen Kyle Squire (Cheshire, England) and Joseph Lockwood (London, England) and one from Australia, junior Shannon McCready (Melbourne, Australia) and Lithuania.
 
Preseason Poll
Post was picked to finish fifth in the CACC North Division this year. The Eagles received 41 votes. Bloomfield and Philadelphia were selected to finish first in the North and South Divisions, respectively.
 
On the Horizon
The Eagles have over a week off before their next game on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at home against Bloomfield. Tip-off at Drubner is set for 7:30 p.m.
