PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Down by ten points at the half, the Post University men's basketball team outscored USciences 51-38 in the final frame to earn a 72-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road victory on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Stephen Perry Jr. (Westhampton, N.J.) led the comeback with 16 points in the second half.
Perry Jr. led the Eagles with 20 points in the victory on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Senior
Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) made two clutch free-throws to preserve the win and finished with 11 points and five boards. Seniors
Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) and
Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added 10 points each.
Krischer hit from distance with 1:37 remaining in the game to put Post ahead 70-65. Garrett Kerr scored a fastbreak layup off an Eagles' turnover with 50 seconds left to cut the deficit to just one. Post threw away the ensuing in-bounds pass, but stopped the Devils on defense as the home team was forced to foul.
Cummings hit two free-throws with 19 ticks remaining to push the advantage to 72-69. USciences had three late chances to tie but were unable to convert.
The Eagles shot 69.2% from the field and 80.0% from behind the arc in the second half. Perry Jr. scored eight straight points for Post as part of an 11-4 run early in the half that pulled the Eagles within three at 37-34.
The Devils built their lead back up to as many as seven points before a jumper by senior
Derrick Strong (St. Louis, Mo.) with 8:44 remaining knotted the game at 53-53. Strong found Willis from long range on the Eagles' next possession to put them in front and they would never trail again.
Post held an early 5-3 lead in the first half but USciences took control with 14:42 left in the period and went into the locker room ahead 31-21. The Eagles shot just 32.0% in the half.
The victory halts Post's longest losing streak since the 2004-05 season. Kerr led USciences with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
The Eagles return home on Tuesday, Jan. 14 against Concordia. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
