Post Men’s Basketball Eases By #25 Dominican, 81-65

Junior Jerry Cummings Scores Career-High 30 Points On 12-For-18 Shooting

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Post University men's basketball team earned its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2009-10 as it topped #25 Dominican 81-65 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at the Hennessy Center on Wednesday night. The Eagles got a career-high 30 points from junior Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) as he eclipsed 20 points for the sixth time this year. It was the second 30-point performance by a Post player this season.
 
The last win against a top-25 team came at Stonehill on Dec. 19, 2009, a 74-68 decision in Easton, Mass. With the win, Post surpassed its win total from a season ago and stands at 14-9 overall and 10-6 in conference play. The Eagles are 12-1 this season when it pours in at least 70 points.
 
Individually, Cummings finished a rebound shy of a double-double as he added nine boards and two blocks. He was 12-for-18 from the field and made his first five shots of the night. Junior Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added 18 points, six rebounds and four assists, and sophomore Braxton Gardner (Bridgeport, Conn.) chipped in a career-high 13 points. For the fourth time this season, senior Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) turned in double digit assists. He had 10 on the night.
 
After Dominican (18-4, 12-2 CACC) claimed an 11-8 lead on a Nick Smith layup at the 14:24 mark of the first half, Post used a 14-2 run over a span of over a span of 3:01 to seize a 22-13 advantage with 11:24 remaining in the stanza. During the spurt Krischer and Cummings netted seven points apiece.


The Chargers trimmed their deficit to 29-20 with 8:33 remaining, but the Eagles pushed the advantage back to double figures with a 9-1 run over their own to make the score 38-21 with 6:01 to go in the first half. Cummings hit a layup and a triple during the spurt, while junior Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) freshman Gediminas Juozapavicius (Kedainiai, Lithuania) added field goals.
 
Post pushed its first half lead to as many as 21 points, 51-30, after Cummings hit a three-pointer with 54 seconds to play. The Eagles took a 51-32 lead into the intermission.
 
In the second half, a jumper by Krischer gave Post its largest lead of the contest a 25-point margin, 74-49, with eight minutes to play. Dominican scored the final five points of the night to cut the deficit to as little as 16 points, but drew no closer.
 
For the game, Post boasted a field goal percentage of 52.4 (33-for-63), and it held a 37-27 edge on the glass. The Eagles had 13 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second chance points and netted 23 points after 13 Chargers' turnovers.
 
Post will return to the Drubner Center on Saturday, Feb. 9, when it hosts the University of the Sciences in a CACC contest. Game time is set for 3 p.m. Prior to tip-off, the athletics department will honor the men's basketball senior class.
