CALDWELL, N.J. – For the fourth time this season, the Post University men's basketball team won consecutive games. The Eagles turned in a 69-61 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory at Caldwell. Post shot 44.4 percent from the field, to improve to 10-13 overall and 8-6 in conference play.
The Eagles were led by junior
Sarunas Jackson (Corona, Calif.) who scored 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting. He added six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Classmate
Jerry Cummings (La Plata, Md.) contributed 14 points and shot 50 percent from the field. He went 4-for-5 from the foul line. Cummings had a team-high seven rebounds. Senior
Josh Lopez (Anchorage, Alaska) shot 4-for-6 from the floor and scored 11 points and six rebounds.
Over a span of 7:16 in the second half, the Eagles used a 15-4 run to turn a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead, 57-49. Junior
Dantay Sanford (Compton, Calif.) scored the first five points of the stretch with a layup and a triple at the 12:45 and 12:26 marks, respectively. Sophomore
Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) hit a pair of three-pointers during the spurt, the second of which pushed the Post lead to nine, 55-46, with 7:29 to play.
The lead grew to as many as 10 points, 59-49, on a Lopez layup with 4:09 to go.
Caldwell (12-10, 7-8 CACC) scored seven of the first nine points of the game, powered by a three-point play by Nikola Otovic. The Cougars grew their first half lead to as many as seven, 20-13, after a Michael Balkovic layup with 8:29 to play in the opening half.
In the final 51 seconds of the first half, the Eagles scored six straight points. Cummings netted four points, while Lopez hit a jumper with 12 seconds to go. The spurt helped Post even the score at 28-28 at the intermission.
For the game, Post scored 20 points off 15 Caldwell turnovers. The Eagles had seven steals, led by Jackson and Cummings who had two apiece. The Cougars outscored the Eagles in the paint, 34-20. Caldwell was led by Otovic who scored 14 points.
With the win, Post solidified its spot in second place in the CACC North Division. The Eagles are a half-game ahead of Dominican. The Chargers are 7-6 in conference play after they defeated Nyack 102-77 Thursday night.
The Eagles will play three of their final four games at the Drubner Center. The stretch begins Saturday, Feb. 11, when Post University hosts a Play 4 Kay doubleheader against CACC foe Chestnut Hill. The men's game will begin at 3 p.m.
