James Lee Leads Post Past Nyack On Senior Night, 86-71

Eagles’ Senior Explodes For Career-High 28 Points; Marks Best Scoring Output Of Season For All Post Players

WATERBURY, Conn. – Senior James Lee (Montclair, N.J.) of the Post University men's basketball team erupted for a career-high 28 points as the Eagles earned an 86-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Nyack on Tuesday night at the Drubner Center. In his final game at the Drubner Center in his collegiate career, Lee tallied the most points by any Post player this season.
 
Lee shot 12-for-18 from the field and 4-for-4 from the foul line. He was one of three Eagles who grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Senior Geraldo Fernandez (Monticello, N.Y.) finished with nine points and seven rebounds, and junior Jerry Cummings (La Plata, Md.) added seven points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and junior Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
With 5:52 remaining in the second half, and Post (13-14, 11-7 CACC) ahead 70-61, the Eagles went on a 14-5 run over a span of 3:50 to gain their largest lead of the game, a 16-point margin, 82-66, with 2:02 to play. Lee keyed the run with six points, including a pair of alley-oops, which bookended the stretch. Wilcox and senior Josh Lopez (Anchorage, Alaska) scored four points apiece during the spurt.
 
Post built its lead to double figures during an 8-2 run to start the second half. During the first 2:55 after the break, Lee scored four points, while Wilcox and junior Dontay Sanford (Compton, Calif.) each added layups. The score after the spurt was 47-37, in favor of the Eagles, with 17:05 to play in the contest.
 
After Fernandez hit a layup to make the score 14-13 in favor of Nyack with 13:50 to play in the first half, the Warriors used made three straight field goals to grow their lead to 20-13 with 12:30 to play in the opening stanza.
 
However, Post responded with a 9-0 run over a span of 1:59 to take a two-point advantage, 22-20, with 10:10 to play in the period. Fernandez started the run with a jumper. Krischer hit a jump shot. After a layup by Wilcox, Krischer capped the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key.
 
The Eagles took a 29-28 lead on a Cummings layup. His field goal also sparked a 10-0 Post run over a span of 3:15. After the run, which ended with a Cummings layup, the Eagles had their largest lead of the half, a nine-point margin, 37-28 with 2:20 to play before the intermission. Nyack scored the last five points of the half, to cut the Post lead to four, 39-35.
 
For the game, the Eagles shot 50 percent (35-for-70) from the field and won the rebounding battle, 37-28, including a 13-4 edge on the offensive glass. Post notched 10 steals and forced Nyack into 23 turnovers. Individually, senior Mark Spellman (Waterbury, Conn.) finished with a career-high six points on 2-for-3 shooting from the field. He added a rebound and an assist as well.
 
Post will return to action when it begins play in its sixth straight CACC Tournament. The Eagles will be the third seed from the North Division and travel to the second-seeded Philadelphia from the South Division. More information about the game will be released when it becomes available.
