Cummings’ Overtime Put Back Lifts Men’s Basketball Past LIU Post 73-72

Post Erases Four-Point Deficit In Overtime And Scores Last Five Points Of Game

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) of the Post University men's basketball team finished a Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) missed layup to lift the Eagles over two-time defending East Coast Conference (ECC) champion LIU Post 73-72 at Pratt Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. His finish came with 2.1 seconds remaining and capped a 5-0 run to conclude the extra stanza.
 
After the Pioneers scored the first four points of the overtime period to take a 72-68 lead, junior Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) pulled the Eagles within one after a three-pointer with 1:16 to play. After a traveling violation on the Pioneers with 36.2 seconds to play, Post (3-1) had the ball with the opportunity to win the game.
 
Krischer missed a three-point attempt with 16 seconds on the clock, but junior Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) grabbed the offensive rebound on the block to give the Eagles the last shot. Wilcox drove to the right and missed the layup, but Cummings was in perfect position under the basket to finish.
 
In the second half, the Eagles took their largest lead of the day, a 10-point margin 57-47, with 8:27 to play. The margin came as the result of a 12-0 run over a span of 3:37. During the spurt four different Post players scored and senior Sarunas Jackson (Inland Empire, Calif.) tallied four points.
 
The Pioneers held the Eagles without a field goal for the final 4:59 of regulation and closed the second half on a 9-2 run over the final 1:26 to force the extra session. Billy Butler hit two free throws to tie the score at 68-68, and Tyuan Williams converted a three-point play with 1:02 on the clock for LIU Post.
 
Post opened the matchup on a 9-4 run which included a pair of triples from Willis and one from Krischer. The spurt occurred over the first 3:31 of the matchup.
 
LIU Post (0-3) went on an 8-0 run over a span of 1:21 seconds to take a 14-11 lead with 12:09 to play in the opening stanza. The Pioneers took their largest lead of the half on a Charles McCann free throw with 5:10 to play in the first half.
 
Over the final 4:43 of the opening half, Post went on a 10-4 run to take a 34-32 lead into the intermission. During the spurt Krischer hit a pair of triples and junior Derrick Strong (St. Louis, Mo.) and Perry nailed jumpers.
 
Individually, Stephen Perry (Westhampton, N.J.) notched a team-high 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. He went 5-for-8 from distance. Cummings, Willis and Krischer chipped in 13, 13 and 12 points, respectively. Wilcox contributed a game-high nine assists. Tobin Carberry led LIU Post with 21 points and Williams corralled a game-high 15 rebounds.
 
As a team, Post shot 28-for-66 (42.4 percent) from the floor and 13-for-30 from three-point range, while it held its counterparts to 38.1 percent from the field and just 15.4 percent from three-point land. LIU Post held a 48-30 advantage on the glass.
 
Post will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20, when it welcomes Concordia to the Drubner Center for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tilt. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
