Searing-hot Smith not enough to lead Eagles past UMass-Lowell in opener

Spencer Smith scored a game-high 26 points and went 5-for-6 from three point territory, but the Eagles dropped their season opener to UMass-Lowell, 85-79.

Scott Tavares-Taylor scored 21 points and had 6 assists for the Riverhawks (1-0), who used a 12-4 run midway through the second half to take control of the game. 

The Eagles (0-1) never trailed in the first half, taking a 36-33 lead into the break. But the UMass-Lowell bench made the difference in the second half, outscoring the Eagles reserves, 52-22.

Matt Welch scored 20 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the host Riverhawks, who were playing in front of hometown fans in the school's namesake UMass-Lowell Tip-Off Classic.

UMass-Lowell shot 65 percent in the second half, outscoring Post University 52-43. 

Eight different Eagles scored, led by the unconscious Smith, who went 8-for-10 from the field, 5-for-6 from the three point line, and 5-5 from the charity stripe. Cecil Stinson* also added 14 points for the Eagles.

Post University will face Pace University on Sunday, which defeated Felician College, 90-75, in earlier action in Lowell.
