Women's Basketball Drops Sunday Home Matchup Against Holy Family

WATERBURY, Conn. – Junior forward Alyssa Rossignol finished with a team-high 14 points for Post University Women's Basketball, as the Eagles played their second game in less than 24 hours after a nearly three-hour, quadruple overtime bout against Jefferson University on Saturday afternoon. However, the result would not be the same as Post's valiant first-half effort gave way to Holy Family University outscoring the Eagles, 45-21, as Post fell 85-52, on Sunday.

THE BASIC

Post University 52, Holy Family University 85

Post University (8-12, 5-9 CACC)

Holy Family University (19-3, 14-0 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After only scoring 28 points last Saturday against the Tigers on the road in their 49-point loss, Post surpassed that total in the first half alone, scoring 31 points on 13-for-29 (44.8%) shooting, while hitting half of their threes along the way. Rossignol led the way for Post in that opening half with 11 points, going 5-for-10 from the field, and connecting on her lone three-point attempt.

On the Holy Family side, all nine players who saw the floor finished with points, led by junior forward Kara Meredith's nine points on 4-for-5 shooting, while senior guard Taylor Hinkle led all Tigers with four rebounds. In the last matchup, the Eagles finished with just 15 total rebounds, closing the first half today with 17 boards, tying Holy Family in that category. Long-range shooting was also a specialty for the Tigers, going 6-for-15 (40%) from three-point land, taking a nine-point lead into the break, 40-31.

Post never had the lead in the first half, only tying the game at two on a jumper from sophomore forward Tiara Tyson in the early stages of the first quarter. From there, the Eagles would score just seven points the rest of the frame, falling behind by double-digits, 19-9, while going 4-for-13 from the field with one three-pointer made.

Like yesterday against Jefferson, the shooting would come to life in the second quarter, as both teams shot above 50%, with Post closing the gap down to as few as six points three times, with the final time being 37-31, with 2:04 remaining in the half. This came after Holy Family opened up a 13-point lead, 24-11, with 7:46 left in the frame, before Rossignol sparked a 5-0 run all on her own.

The tables would turn in favor of the Tigers heavily in the third quarter, as they outscored Post by a hefty 27-8 margin, which would be more than enough to roll the rest of the way to their 14th conference victory of the season, remaining undefeated in conference play so far this season. After trailing by nine points at halftime, a leadoff layup from senior forward Claire Dougherty would put the Tigers back ahead by double digits for good, as they rode the momentum to a 28-point lead, 67-39, into the fourth quarter.

In the 85-52 victory for Holy Family, senior guard Kaelah Carter led with 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting, nailing 4-of-8 threes in 22 minutes as a starter, while Hinkle closed with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double in 24 minutes. Sophomore guard Amy Ngo came off the bench for a near-perfect shooting day for the Tigers, going 4-for-5 with 12 points, while Meredith finished the game with 10 points, one more than she had at halftime.

Outside of 14 points from Rossignol, the rest of the Eagle offense was held in check with Tyson scoring nine points on 4-for-11 shooting, and as a team, Post was 21-for-58 (36.2%) shooting, going 0-for-5 in the second half from three-point range, while Holy Family hit seven second-half three-pointers, to close at 13-for-34 (38.2%) in the game.
