WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior forward
Alyssa Rossignol was the only Post University Women's Basketball player to reach double digits on Saturday, scoring 24 points on 11-for-20 shooting as the Eagles could not ride the momentum of their mid-week win at the College of Staten Island, returning to conference play with a 65-48 loss to Goldey-Beacom College.
THE BASIC
Post University 48, Goldey-Beacom College 65
Post University (2-8, 0-5 CACC)
Goldey-Beacom College (3-12, 3-5 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
10 points for Rossignol for the Eagles and sophomore guard Marasia Dyes for the Lightning made up a first half in which Goldey-Beacom led by seven points, 26-19, heading into the break. Post's offense was just 9-for-28 (32.1%) from the field as Rossignol accounted for 11 of those shots, going 5-for-11 overall with two rebounds, assists, and steals.
No other Post player had more than three points among the nine players that saw playing time in the first two quarters, while senior guard Rory Ciszkowski had six points on 2-of-3 shooting overall with a team-leading five rebounds for the Lightning. Goldey-Beacom dominated on the boards by a 22-10 margin while hitting 5-of-16 threes (31.3%), which accounted for over half of their first-half field goals (9-for-24).
After neither team scored for the first 2:05 of the contest, a three from senior guard Karlee Lemon got the scoring started for the Lightning, who led by as many as 11 points in the first half, never trailing at any point.
Out of halftime, sophomore guard
Kamryn Porter hit on two free throws, dwindling the deficit down to five points, and Rossignol's five consecutive points following a layup from sophomore forward Lydia Betz, made it a one-point game, 28-27, at the 7:10 mark of the third. That would be the closest the Eagles got to tying or taking the lead in the contest as Betz hit back-to-back triples to boost Goldey-Beacom back to a seven-point advantage.
The Lightning would ride a 12-point lead, 50-38, into the fourth quarter, never allowing their edge to dip below double digits and leading by as many as 19 points along the way before completing the wire-to-wire victory, 65-48. The Eagles would have just nine second-half rebounds, comparable to 19 for the Lightning, who outrebounded Post by a significant 41-19 margin.
Ciszkowski tied for the team lead in points with Betz as each had 15 points, but the senior finished with a double-double, snagging 10 boards, while going 5-for-8 from the floor with all eight shots coming from beyond the arc. Dyes also had a solid game for a Lightning team that went 23-for-52 overall (44.2%), closing with 13 points and going 5-for-9 from the field with six rebounds and six assists.
Of the 52 shots taken by Post, only 10 came from three-point land, but Rossignol accounted for nearly 40% of all the shots taken by the Eagles. Beyond her 11-for-20 showing with 24 points, the rest of the Post lineup combined to go 9-for-32 (28.1%) from the field overall and 1-for-8 (12.5%) from three. The Eagles won the turnover battle, 22-16, mustering up 17 points off turnovers while the Lightning only managed four points.
