MIDDLEBURY, Conn. – After getting postponed on Tuesday due to rain down at Goldey-Beacom College, Post University Women's Tennis saw their second road match of the season at East Stroudsburg University turn into a home matchup on Thursday afternoon at the Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club, dropping their fourth consecutive match to start the season in a tight 4-3 contest on Thursday afternoon.
THE BASICS
Post University 3, East Stroudsburg University 4
Post University (0-4)
East Stroudsburg University (1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winning the Doubles point for the first time this season, a new duo in sophomore
Laura Kotala and senior
Gioia Turco teamed up to win the #3 Doubles, 6-4, over sophomore Claudia Ermina and junior Bega Gator, while the #1 Doubles was captured by junior
Ana Vasilis and freshman
Vitalina Sokoliuk, 6-2. Sokoliuk and Vasilis took down sophomores Lea Stefanovic and Ariel Kelsick in that match, while the only Doubles to go the way of the Warriors was the #2 Doubles in 6-0 fashion, with freshmen Jenna Kastell and Alice Ehrenlechner defeating sophomore
Julie Merlin and freshman
Savannah Croft.
Heading into the Singles with a 1-0 advantage and needing just three wins to capture their first win of the season, the Eagles would only be able to take home two Singles wins from Vasilis and Merlin in the #1 and #3 Singles. Vasilis fended off Stefanovic in the first set of the #1 Singles, 7-6 with a 7-0 tiebreaker win, before a dominant 6-2 win in set two to take her match, while Merlin had a pair of 6-2 victories in the #3 Singles over Ehrenlechner.
However, the #4 and #5 Singles would be captured in a pair of two-set sweeps for Kelsick against Croft and Conover against Kotala and their respective matches, countering the two Singles wins for the Eagles. Freshman Theresa Bauer put the Warriors on the edge of victory with a 6-2 and 6-0 win over Turco in the #6 Singles, while Kastell defeated Sokoliuk in the #2 Singles, 6-3 and 6-2, completing the comeback win for East Stroudsburg, 4-3.
