Big Threes From Burns Help Women's Basketball Stave Off Golden Falcons Rally, Eagles Win Second Straight Game

RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Senior guard Jayden Burns hit a pair of big threes for Post University Women's Basketball against Felician University on Wednesday afternoon, as Burns' and the Eagles helped stave off a 17-point second-half rally by the Golden Falcons that saw the game end up going to overtime. A three from Burns in the fourth helped the Eagles take a two-point lead with 44 seconds left in regulation before freshman center Stephanie Formby's two free throws would force a five-minute overtime session.

Hitting another three with 1:21 left in overtime to give Post a five-point lead and a dagger free throw with eight seconds left, Burns' 13-point performance would help the Eagles to a narrow 69-65 road victory to earn their second straight win and move within one game of being .500 in conference play.

THE BASICS

Post University 69, Felician University 65 (OT)

Post University (7-18, 6-7 CACC)

Felician University (8-16, 3-9 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Without their leading scorer in sophomore forward Alyssa Rossignol, it would be an effort by committee for the Eagles, who finished the game with four scorers in double digits. Junior forward Nicole Parks led all Post players with a career-high 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting, followed by Burns with 13 points on 3-of-9 shooting, freshman guard Jasmine Day-Cox's 5-for-10 afternoon with 12 points, and freshman guard Kamryn Porter's 11 points in 41 minutes on 3-of-8 shooting.

Only two players for the Golden Falcons reached double-digit scoring as it was Formby's 30-point outing, in which she went 12-for-25 from the floor in 40 minutes of action that helped Felician stay afloat in the contest, while junior guard Noella Biduaya had 16 points on 7-for-23 shooting in 38 minutes of playing time.

A first-half of shooting struggles for the Golden Falcons plagued them to the tune of a 22.8% shooting half after going 8-for-35 overall, while the Eagles were 39.3% from the field after shooting 13-for-33 and hitting 3-of-13 (23%) threes to take a 17-point lead. After trailing 6-5 in the first quarter, Post would go on a 15-3 run the rest of the frame as Parks, Burns, Porter, and Day-Cox all got in on the run to give the Eagles an 11-point advantage, 20-9, after one.

While the lead would only grow by six more points in the second quarter, sending the Eagles into halftime with a 17-point lead, their defense would hold the Golden Falcons to just 17 points offensively en route to a 34-17 lead before Felician came to life in the second half. Making up all the ground they had lost in the first half, a 25-8 third quarter, led by 16 points from Formby, would tie the game up at 42 all heading into the fourth. Formby accounted for six of the nine shots from the floor that Felician made in the third while hitting all four of her free throws as the Eagles struggled to the tune of a 3-for-16 (18.8%) shooting frame.

With it being a brand-new game in the fourth, neither side would let the other get ahead by more than three points, which favored Post three times throughout the quarter, including with 3:14 left in regulation, 55-52. After a 4-0 run by the Golden Falcons gave them the lead back by one, 55-54, with 1:41 to go, that would be when Burns hit the go-ahead three that looked to give Post the victory before Formby's two free throws on the ensuing possession after a foul from Parks tied the game at 58 with 36 seconds left.

Burns would miss the potential go-ahead jumper with eight seconds left, while Biduaya missed a game-winning three as time expired for Felician, sending the game to that five-minute overtime. Formby's layup to start the session gave the Golden Falcons their final lead of the game as graduate forward Roxkel Washington started a 7-0 run for Post with four straight points, which was capped off by Burns' three that gave the Eagles a five-point advantage, 65-60, with 1:21 left.

Biduaya would respond with a layup to make it a three-point game while Washington was fouled on the next Post possession, where she split her free throws, keeping the lead at four, 66-62. But a big steal by Day-Cox led to senior guard Naj White getting two free throws, which she would hit, and despite Felician getting back within three points with 15 seconds remaining, Burns' split on the two free throws with eight seconds left iced the 69-65 Post win as they return home this Saturday to face Caldwell University in hopes of earning their third straight win.
