Rally Falls Just Short for Men's Tennis, Drop Match with Queens College by 4-3 Score

QUEENS, N.Y. – Close, but no cigar. That was how things shook out for Post University Men's Tennis against Queens College on Monday afternoon inside the QC Tennis Bubble down in New York. After losing the doubles point to the Knights, the Eagles were narrowly unable to get four singles matches in their favor to secure the victory, remaining winless at 0-6 with a 4-3 loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Before the Eagles could win their one match of the doubles, the #2 Doubles featuring junior Dante Despontin and graduate student Gustavo Kerber, by a score of 7-5 over senior Omar El Shehawey and sophomore Lucas Foix Sotos, the Knights would take the two matches necessary for the point. In dominant fashion, senior Roni Rikkonen and junior Cameron Henricy took the #1 Doubles over seniors Anton Andersson and Niklas Langenfeld, 6-2.

A short while later, a 6-4 win by senior Francisco Gonzalez and freshman Tim Andersson over sophomores Josh Cornje and Tobias Strauss in the #3 Doubles sealed the deal to give Queens a 1-0 lead heading into the singles.

Three quick wins for the Knights in the singles helped them take the match before the Eagles salvaged the last three matches to bring the overall team score closer. A pair of 6-1 wins for Foix Sotos over Despontin in the #3 Singles followed by two more identical scores and finished in the #4 Singles by El Shehaway over Langenfeld brought Queens within a match of the team win.

That fourth win came from freshman Noah Gauthier with a 6-2 and 6-4 win over Cronje in the #5 Singles. But in a trio of thrillers, Post got back three points starting with Kerber's three-set win over Tim Andersson in which he came back from a 6-2 loss in set one to win the next two sets by 6-2 scores in the #2 Singles. Then came the first win of junior Ivan Kolchanov's season over freshman David Cerne with a 6-3 win in set one followed by a 7-6 set two win on a 7-5 tiebreaker in the #6 Singles.

Rounding out the wins was Anton Andersson as he took the #1 Singles with a 7-6 win in set one on a 7-5 tiebreaker followed by a 6-3 win in set two over Henricy to bring the margin down to a 4-3 defeat for Post.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • After losing three straight Singles matches before winning against Adelphi, Anton Andersson has now won two straight Singles matches to improve his record to an even 3-3 on the season
  • Dating back to last season, the Eagles are 1-10 in their last eleven matches and have lost four straight
  • Ivan Kolchanov snapped a three-game losing streak in Singles matches this season and a five-game losing streak in Singles overall with his win over David Cerne today
  • Post University is now 0-10 all-time against Queens College with this 4-3 loss being the closest they have come to beating the Knights since the 2013-14 season when they lost 5-4
