Double Trouble Bravo Boosts Women's Basketball to Encore Victory Over Dominican (N.Y.)

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – It was a fight until the very end for Post University Women's Basketball who began their second trip around the North Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference on Tuesday night with a game against Dominican (N.Y.) on the road. After a comfortable double-digit win a few weeks ago at home, things would be different this time around as the Eagles escaped a pair of missed three-point attempts in the final 12 seconds along by the Lady Chargers, with the last being blocked by junior guard Naj White, as Post escaped with a 64-61 win and the season sweep of Dominican (N.Y.)

THE BASICS

Post University 64, Dominican (N.Y.) 61

Post University (13-7, 8-2 CACC)

Dominican (N.Y.) (9-11, 6-5 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a slow start for both sides as they would combine for just 21 points in a first quarter that culminated in the Lady Chargers leading by five, 13-8, over Post. However, Dominican (N.Y.) was ice cold throughout the entire first half as they would make just 9-of-40 field goal attempts (22.5%) and go 1-for-11 from three (9.1%) to put up just 23 total first-half points. This would be despite forcing eight Eagle turnovers through the first 20 minutes of play compared to turning the ball over themselves just three times. Yet the Lady Chargers held only a three-point edge, 5-2, in the points off turnovers category.

Still trailing by five in the second, 16-11, the Eagles slowly dwindled down the deficit before ending the frame on a 9-0 run after trailing again by two points. Graduate forward Trinity Bravo poured in seven points on that run which sent Post into the locker room ahead by seven, 30-23, and already had a double-double at that point as well. Bravo collected 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 12 rebounds in about 15 minutes of action for the Eagles. The only person close to touching her rebound total at the half was senior center Chidinma Nbukauba who had six boards for the Lady Chargers.

Coming out of the half, Dominican (N.Y.) started things with a 5-0 run that cut their deficit down to two, 30-28, before Bravo got the first basket of the half for Post. Senior guard Angelina DiMarsico's three at the 6:55 mark would tie it up at 34 all and the first lead since the first half for the Lady Chargers came following a three-point shot by freshman guard Isabella Javier with 3:21 left to put Dominican (N.Y.) ahead 43-41. But back at it again was Bravo with her own 6-0 run to end the quarter, bringing her total for the third up to nine points, and giving Post a four-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes, 47-43.

With the game tied at 55 and only 3:08 to go, the Eagles took the lead for good after a 4-0 run by graduate forward Taina Pagan, although the final minutes would still be tight. The Lady Chargers attempted seven free throws down the stretch and missed just one, but the day was defined by missed shots at the charity stripe as they went just 11-for-21 (52.4%) from there which proved to be a huge difference maker given the final score.

Both sides hit 7-of-10 fourth-quarter free throws, but Post held an overall edge with 15-of-22 free throws made. Three missed free throws in the closing minutes of the game by the Eagles would give the Lady Chargers life and after freshman guard Tamia Nunes missed a three, Bravo's turnover gave them one more shot at tying the score. Called upon to take the shot was junior guard Tanasha Mills who would be blocked by White at the buzzer as Post secured the 64-61 victory and fourth straight win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • After scoring a double-double in the first half, Trinity Bravo fell just shy of a 20-20 game, scoring 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting with 16 rebounds
  • Maya Klein was held scoreless for the first time this season, going 0-for-7 from the field and 0-for-5 from three – The scoreless game snaps Klein's double-digit point streak at eight games and her in-conference double-digit point streak at 11 consecutive conference games
  • Dede Stevenson was the only other Post player to reach double figures after scoring 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting while also grabbing the third-most rebounds on the team with six
  • This is the first time since the 2019-20 season in which Post University has swept the season series from Dominican (N.Y.) – It is only the third season sweep in program history
