Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Michael Vesci, Director of Athletic Communications

Near-Perfect Shooting Night for Nicole Parks Not Enough in Women's Basketball Loss to Queens (N.Y.)

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Junior forward Nicole Parks had a near-perfect shooting night from the floor for Post University Women's Basketball, going 6-for-7 with 13 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and a steal over 18 minutes in Monday night's rescheduled road matchup with Queens College (N.Y.). However, a hot start in the first quarter for the Knights would be more than enough to sustain them throughout the entire 40 minutes of play, leading to Post's ninth loss in 10 games this season by a 60-44 final.

THE BASICS

Post University 44, Queens College (N.Y.) 60

Post University (1-9)

Queens College (N.Y.) (5-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Not much was doing for the Eagles in the first quarter, leading to a 19-3 lead for the Knights after the opening 10 minutes of play which saw Post go 1-for-13 from the floor and 0-for-6 from three. The Knights started the game off on a 10-0 run and the first points of the night for Parks at the 5:56 mark would end up being the only basket from the field that the Eagles would manufacture. Freshman guard Jasmine Day-Cox would tally the only other Post point with 1:33 to go in the quarter from the free throw line.

But a defensive second quarter on both sides looked to get the Eagles back within striking distance similar to last week against AIC at home. This time around it was the offense for the Knights which struggled to the tune of a 1-for-12 shooting quarter with two made free throws on eight total attempts, limiting them to four points on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, sophomore forward Hannah Finnerty broke an 0-for-11 start from three for Post as part of a 6-0 run to end the half to bring them back within six points, 23-17, heading into the locker room.

Getting back to their first-quarter form, sophomore guard Jalea Abrams and the Knights scored nine of the first 11 points of the third quarter, building their lead back up to double digits at 13 points following one of the two threes Abrams had in the game, 32-19, with seven minutes to go in the frame. While that three was the only one of the quarter for Queens, they would go 7-for-12 overall from the field to build their lead to 11 points, 40-29, with one quarter to play.

The deficit will build to as many as 18 points on two occasions over the final 10 minutes while never dropping below 13 points after Abrams led off with five of the first seven points for the Knights in the quarter. Post finished the game shooting 17-for-55 overall, sitting at 30.9% shooting while struggling from long range with a 3-for-20 mark from three which came out to 15% shooting. Outside of their 1-for-12 second quarter, Queens shot over 50% from the floor in the other three quarters, topping out at 60% shooting in the first quarter while finishing 20-for-46 overall (43.5%) and 16-for-27 from the free throw line in the 60-44 win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The 13-point performance for Nicole Parks was a season-high for her and the first time the junior has cracked double-digit scoring so far this year
  • Jalea Abrams led the Queens College offense with 21 points on 6-for-15 shooting while draining two threes and hitting 7-of-8 free throws in the win
  •  In 10 games this season, Post University has won a total of nine quarters out of 40 played while tying one in points as well -- The Eagles only won the second quarter in tonight's game by a 14-4 margin which was also their fewest points allowed in a quarter this season
  •  As a team, Post University shot 3-for-20 from three-point range for a 14.3% shooting night, the Eagles have shot under 20% from three in three games this season while being under 30% in six of their 10 games

WHO'S NEXT
Post University ends their three-game road trip with an in-state matchup against the University of New Haven scheduled for Wednesday night at 5:30 PM. The Eagles have never beaten the Chargers in the six all-time matchups, losing by double-digit margins each time, and last facing them back during the 2018-19 season in a neutral site game in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
