Women's Basketball Falls Against Nationally-Ranked Assumption in Road Matchup

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior guard Naj White finished in double figures for the second time in three games to start the year for Post University Women's Basketball, but with a team-leading 11 points, the rest of the Eagle offense would be unable to keep up with nationally-ranked Assumption University on Wednesday night in Worcester, Massachusetts, falling to 0-3 on the season with a 76-44 loss.

THE BASICS

Post University 44, Assumption University 76

Post University (0-3)

#20/#13 Assumption University (3-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the Greyhounds they were led by a pair of 20-plus point scorers in graduate guard Molly Stokes with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting with her only miss being one of the three three-point attempts she had, followed by senior forward Marina Callahan who had 22 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double on 10-of-19 shooting in the win. As a team, Assumption shot over 40% in all four quarters with their best being the third in which they shot 64.2% but were outscored, 18-16, by Post.

However, outside of the one quarter in the game, the Eagles were outscored by 13 points in each of the first two quarters and by five points in the fourth quarter en route to the 29-point defeat. This was the fourth meeting between the two teams in the all-time series and all four now have gone the way of the Greyhounds by double-digit margins since they began playing each other during the 2016-17 season, but the 29-point win for Assumption was the largest margin of victory in the all-time series, surpassing the 23-point win they had against Post back in 2016-17.

As a team, the Eagles would shoot at only 28.1%, making 16-of-57 attempts overall and finishing 30% from three-point land after a 6-for-20 day. Most notable were the free throw and turnover struggles as they shot 9-for-20 from the charity stripe and for the third straight game turned the ball over 20-plus times, finishing with 23 turnovers which led to 21 points for the Greyhounds. Post would force 21 turnovers of their own, leading to 18 points, but the biggest discrepancy in numbers would be points in the paint, which Assumption dominated by a 50-18 margin.

Through three games this season, Post is currently shooting 30.7% from the field, 25.8% from three-point range, and only 45.2% from the free throw line having made 19-of-42 attempts after tonight's 76-47 loss.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Naj White was the only player to finish in double figures for Post University having 11 points on 4-for-13 shooting while grabbing a team-high six rebounds
  • The third quarter of today's game marked only the second time in 12 quarters so far this year in which Post University has outscored their opponent -- The other one was the first quarter of the first game of the season against Southern New Hampshire University, 14-10
  • In their first three games of the season, Post University has committed 20-plus turnovers in each affair while doing so in just eight games throughout the entire 2023-24 season
  • This is the first time since the 2022-23 in which Post University has been held under 50 points in back-to-back games when they lost to Southern New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce on December 9th and 11th, 2022
WHO'S NEXT
Post University has its first home game of the season this Saturday at 2:00 PM against College of Staten Island in the Drubner Center. The Eagles are 3-0 all-time against the Dolphins after winning a thriller against them last season in which Post came back from an 11-point deficit with under four minutes to go to win behind a layup from Roxkel Washington with four seconds left in regulation.
