In Final Fall Match, Women's Tennis Falls 5-2 Against Goldey-Beacom on the Road

WILMINGTON, Del. –  In what would be considered a rebuilding year for Post University Women's Tennis with the addition of five newcomers to the team, the Eagles dropped their final road match of the fall season, 5-2, against Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday afternoon. With Post missing the CACC Tournament after finishing in fifth place, the Eagles close the fall with a 3-13 record overall and 2-8 record in conference play with a pair of wins over Dominican (N.Y.) while the one other win came against Molloy University at home.

Goldey-Beacom College (8-3, 7-3 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Although young, the Eagles showed improvement as the year progressed, including in their second matchup against the Lightning who swept them on their home court back in September. While Doubles would go the same as last time with Goldey-Beacom sweeping through, Post would steal a pair of Singles matches on the day.

Those two wins came from senior Nina Langenfeld over junior Jess Sanzo in the #4 Singles in three sets after she dropped set one, 6-1, then came back to win set two, 6-2, and the 10-point tiebreaker in set three, 10-5. Freshman Julie Merlin also won in three sets, splitting the first two sets with 6-2 scores against junior Zehra Canbaz before winning the tiebreaker set, 10-2.

Elsewhere in the Singles matches, freshman Melanie Leussink was swept 6-0 and 6-0 against freshman Sofia Lopez in the #5 Singles while freshman Romy Leussink in the #6 Singles was beaten out by senior Lucia Corte, 6-0 and 6-1. Junior Nahomi Quinonez and freshman Annelein Van Urk did battle in the #3 Singles with Quinonez winning 6-0 and 6-2 while rounding out the Singles matches was the #1 Singles with senior Elizabeth Mova winning against senior Megan Lombardt, 6-1 and 6-4.

In those earlier Doubles matches, Lombardt and Merlin fell in the #1 Doubles to Canbaz and Lopez, 6-1, followed by a 6-0 sweep for Mova and Quinonez over Langenfeld and Van Urk in the #2 Doubles, and then a 6-3 victory for Sanzo and Corte in the #3 Doubles against junior Gioia Turco and Melanie Leussink which helped the Lightning garner that 5-2 win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • At 2-8 in conference play, this is the fewest conference wins for Post University in a single season since the 2021-22 season in which the Eagles went 1-5
  • Julie Merlin finishes the year with the best Singles record in conference play on the team at 4-6 after her win in the #2 Singles today
  • Dropping the Doubles matchups again today, Post University is now 1-13 when losing the Doubles point this season and 2-0 when they win it
  • After winning the previous three matchups against Goldey-Beacom College, Post University has lost the last two, both of which were this season at home and on the road

WHO'S NEXT
Since they are not in the CAC Tournament this season, Post University will wait until the spring to play a few more matches on their slate starting with one against Adelphi University at 3:00 PM on April 2nd, 2025, in New York. The two teams met once two years ago with the Eagles pulling out the 4-3 victory.
