Fiery Third Quarter Boosts Women’s Basketball Over Georgian Court, 75-62

WATERBURY, Conn. –  The Eagles extended their win streak against Georgian Court this afternoon to eight with another victory over the Lions, 75-62. The Lions were able to keep a tight leash in the first half but an explosive offensive second half start gave the Eagles an eventual 23-point lead that would propel them to another CACC win.

THE BASICS

Post University 75, Georgian Court University 62

Post University (11-7, 6-2 CACC)

Georgian Court University (3-14, 3-5 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both squads struggled offensively in the first frame, but even though the Lions scored first, the Eagles were able to take the lead that they would not relinquish heading into the second frame, 18-13.

After just over two minutes of scoreless action, the Lions landed back-to-back layups to come within one point but the Eagles pulled away thanks to a pair of baskets from the charity stripe followed by a duo of layups of their own from Lesandra Turner and Trinity Bravo to make it 24-19. Post continued to stay ahead offensively, grabbing an eight-point lead with 2:01 to go after a Naj White fast break before Tijane Simmons shook the court, hitting one from behind the arc as the buzzer sounded to end the first, with a seven-point edge, 32-25.

Heading into the break, Post shot 36 percent from the field while the Lions shot 39.3 percent to end the first. The Lions were able to grab a total of six offensive rebounds compared to the Eagles' two, while defensively the home team recorded 11 rebounds compared to Georgian Court's 14.

Georgian Court was the first to score once again, however, Post's Maya Klein got her squad fired up offensively with one from downtown at 8:55 before turning around to hit another three just 40 ticks later and grab a double-digit lead (38-27). The Eagles never looked back, eventually grabbing their biggest lead of the game (23-points) with 1:35 left in the third to head into the final frame, 60-37.

It was Deja vu as the Lions broke the scoreless action with a two-pointer before Klein sunk one from three-point land after being set up by Bravo. At the 7:54 mark the Eagles took a 26-point advantage topped off by a Dede Stevenson jumper to bring the score to 67-41. However, in the remaining minutes the Lions slowly chipped away, cutting their deficit to 10 but they were unable to reach single digits before the Eagles took the eventual 75-62 win thanks to an explosive third quarter.
