Philadelphia, Pa. – The Post University women's basketball team's quest for its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship fell just short in a 63-54 loss to Dominican University in the title game on Sunday afternoon on the campus of Thomas Jefferson University.
The Eagles end their season 21-10, the second most wins in program history. Dominican earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Sha'Raya Haines led the way for the Eagles with a team-high 24 points, which moved her to second all-time in Post University history in scoring with 1,514, surpassing
Tracey Garofalo who scored 1,510. Haines also added four steals, four assists and nine rebounds.
Tyree Allen scored nine points to go with five rebounds and
TiJanae Simmons scored nine points with four rebounds.
In the first quarter, both teams struggled from the field as the Chargers took an 11-8 lead as the teams combined to shoot just 7-for-25 from the field (28 percent). Allen hit a three for the Eagles and Haines also scored three points in the quarter.
During the second quarter, Dominican jumped out to a 19-12 lead behind threes from Tanasha Mills and Angelina DiMarsico and would lead by as much as 11 at 26-15 with 4:33 left, but Haines scored eight straight points, including two threes to cut Post's deficit to 26-23. Dominican went into the half leading 33-26 after a layup from Cayla Howard at the buzzer.
The game turned back into a defensive battle in the third, but the Eagles were able to get within two at 38-36 with 2:55 remaining. But Dominican would maintain the seven-point lead into the fourth, 45-38.
Post once again made a push, cutting their deficit to 47-45 just 2:25 into the fourth as Simmons and
Tyara McQueen hit back-to-back threes, but Alexis Suarez scored the next five for Dominican as they regained their seven-point advantage. The Eagles made one last push, as Haines and
Kiara Eubanks combined for the next seven points to make it a 54-52 Dominican lead 2ith 2:30 left.
Dominican would go 7-for-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch as the Eagles had just one more field goal the rest of the way.
Eubanks finished with four points and six rebounds to go with a team-high two blocks. McQueen finished with four points.
Haines and Simmons were named to the CACC All-Tournament team.
Howard finished with a team-high 21 points for Dominican. Suarez had 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds and was named CACC Tournament MVP.
