Polanco Has Double-Double, But Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker To Bloomfield, 60-57

Bloomfield, N.J. - Freshmen Melanie Polanco (Meriden, Conn.) had a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds and Sha'Raya Haines (Springfield, Ma.) had a team-high 13 points, but the Post University women's basketball team dropped a tough game to Bloomfield on Tuesday night, 60-57 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup.

The loss puts the Eagles at 6-7 for the season and 3-3 in the CACC. Bloomfield is now 3-11 and 2-3, respectively.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles took their largest lead of the game at 53-47 after a three-pointer by senior Lauren Chambers (Lebanon, Pa.) with 5:48 remaining. However, back-to-back layups by Bloomfield's Ilysia Lewis and Bobbi Floyd cut the Eagles lead to 53-51 before a free throw from junior Jessica Degree (Yonkers, N.Y.) extended Post's lead by a point with 3:45 remaining.

Bloomfield responded with a jumper by Jaylah Bennet and another layup by Floyd to take a 55-54 lead with 2:13 remaining. Less than a minute later, Polanco's layup gave the Eagles a 56-55 lead, their final of the game.

The Bears hit five of eight free throws down the stretch and took a 60-57 lead with five seconds left,  but a three from freshman Katelyn Canlas (Washington, Md.) came up just short for the Eagles at the buzzer.

Early on in the game, the Bears jumped out to a 16-6 lead with 3:04 remaining in the quarter before the Eagles closed with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 18-16 going into the second period. Haines had six points during the stretch.

The Eagles took a slim 32-31 lead at the half as the Eagles scored the final five points in the second quarter to take their first lead since 4-2.

Post and Bloomfield exchanged leads six times in the third quarter before two free throws by senior Gabriela Middleton (Coral Springs, Fla.) with one second left gave the Eagles the 48-46 lead heading into the final quarter.

Degree finished with six points and 11 rebounds. Middleton had 11 points and eight rebounds. Chambers finished with nine points off the bench.

The Eagles bench outscored Bloomfield's, 14-4.

Floyd finished with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds for Bloomfield. Dejac McKenzie chipped in with 16 points.

Up next the Eagles take on Jefferson in a CACC road game on Saturday, January 12 at 6:30 p.m.
