Philadelphia, Pa. – Graduate student Jasmyne Fogle (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored 15 points in her return, but the Post University women's basketball team dropped a tight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference clash with Holy Family, 69-67 on Saturday afternoon.
Fogle, who missed the last nine games with an injury, hit a clutch three-pointer with five seconds left to cut the Eagles' deficit to 68-67. However, Alexis Hofstaedter of Holy Family missed the second of two free throws with a second left and the Eagles couldn't get a final shot off before the buzzer.
The Eagles led early and often in the first half, taking a 36-28 lead into the break. Junior Kiana Nichols (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Fogle paced with way for the Eagles with eight points each in the half. Post jumped out to an early 11-4 lead, thanks to five straight points from Fogle and contributions from freshmen Meaghan Gotham (Revere, Mass.) and Katelyn Andres (North Bergen, N.J.) and sophomore Ann Marie Nelson (Draper, Utah.). Post would take a 17-15 lead after the first ten minutes.
Post extended its lead to eight in the second half as Nicole – who was playing her first game as an Eagle - scored eight points in the quarter, including six straight. Junior Toni Deren (Greenlawn, N.Y.) also hit two three-pointers in the quarter.
After the Eagles had their lead cut to four at 54-50 at the end of the third quarter, the two teams engaged in a back and forth affair in the fourth as the teams tied four times and exchanged leads twice. With the game tied at 58 with 3:15 left, junior Lauren Chambers hit a jumper to give the Eagles a two point lead at 60-58. Back to back layup's by Holy Family's Elizabeth Radley and Casey Thomas, respectively gave the Tigers a 62-60 lead at 2:21 before Gotham answered with a jumper of her own to tie the game.
Thomas again would give the Tigers a lead with 1:43 left on a jumper before a tip in from Fogle off a miss from Chambers tied the game at 64-64. Hofstaedter made it a 66-64 lead for the Tigers and added two more free throws on Holy Family's next possession to make it a four point lead before Fogle's three-pointer with five seconds left.
Deren finished the game with 12 points, hitting three three-pointers on the day. Nelson finished with a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Nicole finished with ten points and seven rebounds in her debut.
The Eagles (2-14, 1-9 CACC) were dominant on the boards, outrebounding the Tigers (6-12, 5-5 CACC), 54-32, including 26 on the offensive end. Post had 18 second chance points off of those offensive rebounds. The Eagles bench played a huge role, outscoring Holy Family's, 33-17.
Katie O'Hare led all Tigers in scoring with 17 points. Thomas had 16 points.
Up next for the Eagles is a CACC home game against Goldey-Beacom on January 27 at 1 p.m.
