WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University sprint football team found itself behind just 14-12 at halftime of its season finale against Penn on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field, but a strong second half by the Quakers downed the Eagles 41-12.
After allowing a 66-yard touchdown on the Quakers' second possession of the ball game, the Eagles answered quickly. On the first play from scrimmage following the Penn score, freshman
Buddy Enriquez (Sacramento, Calif.) hit sophomore
LaDarrius Phillips (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) for a 64 yards down the middle of the field for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Penn drove down the field on its next possession, but Mario Del Cueto missed a chance to extend the lead as his 25-yard field goal attempt went wide left. After a punt by the Eagles, Jake Klaus ran in from 15 yards out to make the score 14-6 in favor of Penn.
The Eagles defense stood strong and stopped Penn on a fourth-and-seven at the Post 14 yard line with 5:53 remaining in the first half. Freshman
Khaliq Little (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted twice on fourth down as Post drove into Penn territory. The 20-play drive culminated with Enriquez and Phillips connecting for a score for the second time on the day with just five seconds remaining in the half. The ensuing two-point conversion failed and the score was 14-12 at the break.
The undefeated Quakers locked up the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) title with two touchdowns in the each of the final two quarters.
Enriquez threw for 219 yards and two scores while Philips hauled in four passes for 99 yards. The Eagles set a season high with 96 rushing yards led by Little with 55 yards and senior
Bryan Sheppard (Passaic, N.J.) with 44.
Seniors
Greg Volpe (North Haven, Conn.) and
Chris Leggio (Brewster, N.Y.) each made 10 tackles on the day. Freshman
Dorian Judkins (Fredericksburg, Va.) had six tackles and broke up two passes, including a potential touchdown.
