WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Post University Sprint Football Team dropped its opener against Army on Friday night, 34-0 at Shea Stadium in a Collegiate Sprint Football League game.
The loss puts the Eagles at 0-1 in the young season.
Junior
Greg Volpe (North Haven, Conn.) led all quarterbacks in passing yards, throwing for 262 yards on 18-for-36 passing. He also threw five interceptions.
The Knights opened up the scoring on a 13 yard pass from Mitch Wear to Tucker Van Dyke to five the Knights a 7-0 lead at the 3:15 mark in the first quarter. After being pinned deep on their next possession the Knights drove 99 yards for their next score with 11:14 left in the second quarter on a one yard run by Marqus Burrell to give the Knights a two touchdown lead. The Knights would tack on a 38 yard field goal from Warren Kay before going into the half up 17-0.
After a one yard TD from Wear on a quarterback keeper to begin the third quarter, the Eagles opened up the passing attack as Volpe hit classmate
Jarrick Sharp (Hampton, Va.) for a 60 yard gain, but Sharp fumbled on the play leading to a recovery by the Knights.
However, the Eagles didn't allow the turnover to turn into points as Army's Keegan West threw a pass into the endzone that was picked off by junior
T.J. Piland. It wasn't Piland's only stop on defense. He also prevented a touchdown in the first quarter on an interception off of West, keeping the game scoreless at the time.
The Knights would tack on a field goal in the fourth from Kay and add another touchdown as Brady Miller hooked up with wide receiver Cooper Lycan for a 12 yard score for the final tally.
Sharp led all receivers in yards with 135 on six catches. Senior
Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) had 97 yards receiving on five catches. Defensively, junior
Chris Leggio (Brewster, N.Y.) had a game-high ten tackles.
Up next for the Eagles is their home opener against Penn on September 26 at LaMoy Field for a noon kickoff.
