Game Recap: Sprint Football |

Sprint Football season comes to an end with Senior Day loss to Cornell

Six Seniors Honored Before Contest

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University sprint football team was defeated by Cornell 44-6 on Saturday afternoon to close out its season. Prior to the game the six senior members of the team were honored for their accomplishments.

The Eagles drove right down the field on their opening possession on 13 plays. On the 70-yard drive, Post pounded it on the ground with nine rushes. Freshman Neajaun Jackson (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) had six attempts for 19 yards. Senior Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) ran it in on a reverse play from four-yards out to put the Eagles in front 6-0, but the ensuing point after was blocked by the Big Red.

Cornell followed suit on its first possession as it drove 75 yards down the field all on the ground to take a 7-6 lead. Mahan returned the ensuing kickoff 32 yards into Big Red territory with help from a tremendous block by junior Fabian Santa Cruz (Vista, Calif.). The Eagles got down to the opposing 30-yard line before a fumble ended the drive. Each team was forced to punt on their next possession as the first quarter ended.

Early in the second quarter, Cornell had a second-down play deep in Post territory. The snap was launched over the head of Big Red quarterback Connor Ostrander, but the Eagles were unable to pickup the loose ball. Cornell fell on the ball on the Post 35-yard line and after a false start was left with a third-and-37 from the Post 40.

Junior Bernard Peterson (Pasadena, Md.) picked off Ostrander on the next play and it looked as though the Eagles had ended the threat, but a roughing the passer penalty gave Cornell a first down and four plays later Benjamin Herrera ran it in to make the score 14-7.

From there the Big Red controlled the rest of the game as they ran for 293 yards on the afternoon.

Late in the third quarter with the Eagles down 35-6, Peterson picked off Ostrander again and returned the ball down to the Cornell nine-yard line. Unfortunately, three penalties against the Eagles on the play, gave Post the ball to start the drive on their own 18. The Eagles were unable to convert on a fourth-down try and turned the ball over on downs.

After a Post turnover in the fourth, Cornell drove down to the Eagles five-yard line, but the Post defense was able to stop the Big Red on fourth down.

Post had its third 100-yard rushing performance of the year with 103 yards on the ground led by Jackson with 47. Junior Greg Volpe (North Haven, Conn.) threw for 108 yards. Mahan made six catches for 78 yards.

Sophomore Trevor Patterson (Wildomar, Calif.) and junior Chris Leggio (Brewster, N.Y.) paced the defense with 15 tackles each. Senior Joshua Adjei (Framingham, Mass.) forced one fumble and made three tackles.
