Recap: Eagles Lose Second Straight

Comeback Falls Short

Box Score

Waterbury, Conn. – Senior Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) scored 22 points – all in the second half - but it wasn't enough to overcome a large halftime deficit as the Eagles dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game to Caldwell, 77-68 on Tuesday evening. The loss is the second straight for the Eagles (8-13, 8-7 CACC).

After being tied at 5 apiece two minutes in, the Cougars turned on the jets and went on a 19-5 run over the next eight minutes to take a commanding 24-10 lead after an Emily Caswell layup.

The Eagles attempted a comeback, cutting the deficit to nine points after a three-point play by freshman Liz Falcigno (Middletown, Conn.). However, the Eagles would not get any closer the rest of the half, going into the break, down 42-24.

Sophomore Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) was the only player to score in double figures in the first half, as she scored 12. The Eagles were 9-of-31 from the field in the first half.

Nicole Angelo scored 14 points in the first half for the Cougars.

The second half didn't start out well for the Eagles, falling behind by 22 early on. However, the resilient Eagles fought back, and fought back hard. They cut the deficit to 52-42 after going on an 18-6 run capped by a Falcigno three-point. Latham scored six points during that stretch.

Caldwell would extend its lead to 16 again after a Jeanette Anderson jumper with 8:31 left. Again, the Eagles would cut the lead significantly. This time to four points with 35 seconds left after consecutive layups by Latham and juniorJacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, N.Y.). However, the Cougars (12-10, 10-5 CACC) would hit their last 10 free throws to thwart the miracle comeback.

Post shot 47.4 percent from the field in the second half. Griffin finished with 17 points and Falcigno finished with 15 points for the Eagles.

Angelo led four Cougars in double figures with 25 points. Anderson finished with a double-double with 14 points and 15 boards. Caswell also had a double-double, scoring 12 and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Up next for the Eagles is a Feb. 15 matchup at the Drubner Center against Chestnut Hill at 1 p.m.
