Recap: Eagles Drop Heartbreaker To Caldwell

Latham Has Another Big Night

Box Score

Waterbury, Conn. - Senior Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) had another big night, poiuring in 33 points, but it wasn't enough as the Post women's basketball team dropped a 89-80 decision to Caldwell for its fourth straight defeat.

The Eagles were scorching hot from the field during most of the first half, jumping out to a 20-9 lead, thanks to big buckets from freshman Dericka Sims (Chesapeake, Va.), sophomore Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) and Latham.

Post would extend that lead even further, going up as much as 23 points, taking a 54-31 lead after a jumper by senior Raven Wright-James (Middletown, Conn.) with 2:08 left in the half and looking poised to shut the door early on the Cougars.

Caldwell showed life in the final two minutes of the half, closing with a 10-0 run. Post still went into half time with a comfortable 54-41 lead.

Latham caught fire in the first half, going 8-for-10 from the field, scoring 21 of her 33 points. As a team, the Eagles shot an unfathomable 22-of-34 from the field (64.7 percent). Griffin finished with 12 points in the half.

Jeanette Anderson led all Cougars in first half scoring with 14 points.

The Cougars started the second half the same way the first half ended, as they extended their run to a 24-0 run, finally taking the lead after a Jessica Coscia layup. Junior Jacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, N.Y.) would put an end to the run on the next trip down the court, scoring her only two points of the game with a layup in the paint with 16:24 remaining.

The teams traded buckets for the next four minutes before the Cougars were able to get some separation, taking a 74-65 lead after an Emily Caswell free-throw.

As the Cougars looked to put the game away, the Eagles had different designs, as freshman Liz Falcigno (Middletown, Conn.), Sims, and Latham and Griffin each scored during a 10-0 run, putting the Eagles up 75-74 with 7:19 left.

However, the Eagles luck ran out at the end, with Caldwell finishing the game on a 15-5 run as the Cougars were able to get to the free-throw line at will to put the game away.

Griffin finished with 16 points for the night and Wright-James came close to a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing nine boards.

Post fell to 4-9 on the season and 4-3 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Caldwell improved to 8-6 on the season, and 6-1 in the CACC.

Latham's big night put her just 13 points away from tying the school's all-time leading scoring record, which is held by Tracey Garofalo, who finished with 1,510 during her time as an Eagle.

Up next for Post is another CACC conference match against Concordia at 6 p.m. on Jan. 14 at the Drubner Center. CPTV will broadcast the game as Latham looks to break the school scoring record.
