Grant's dramatic game-winner gives JV basketball 74-71 overtime win

WATERBURY, Conn.--(January 4, 2011) Larry Grant hit a falling-down, two guys-in-his-face, game- winning three pointer and Post University defeated Suffolk College, 74-71 in overtime Tuesday night.

Grant, who had 21 points, knocked down the silky, satin-smooth jumper with 0.7 seconds to play, punctuating a gigantic Eagles comeback and sending several Suffolk reserves to their knees in disbelief.

Post University trailed 25-9 before dumping its full-court press and dominating the rest of the game. The Eagles outscored Suffolk 48-27 over a 14-minute stretch, taking a 57-52 lead.

But Suffolk didn't go quietly into the crisp Waterbury night.

Mike Marcelin scored five straight Suffolk points to tie the game at 62 with 1 minute left in regulation, and Suffolk came up with a great defensive stop to send the game into overtime.

Marcelin finished the game with 20 points.

The two teams traded blows in overtime, with the Eagles' Mark Spellman converting on a layup off of a great feed from Justin Bias to tie the game at 71 with just under 10 seconds left.

A controversial five-second call on the ensuing Suffolk possession gave the ball back to the Eagles with 6.3 seconds left.

That's when Grant decided it was time to send everyone home.

He got the ball on the left wing, took one dribble and rose up, losing his balance as he let go. Grant fell to the floor, kept his follow through, and watched as the ball splashed into the goal. Nothing but net.

Suffolk's Zach Krischer led all scorers with 27 points. Elon Howard and Gabe Garcia each scored 10 points for the Eagles.

Post University returns to action January 12, when the team takes on Dutchess Community College inside the always- electric Drubner Center. Tip time is set for 6 pm.
