CALDWELL, NJ - Two points would prove to be enough as the Caldwell Cougars (14-11, 10-8 CACC) downed the Post University Eagles (6-19, 2-15 CACC) Tuesday night at the Newman Center in Caldwell, NJ behind a stellar performance from the Cougars' Kirsty Leedham. Leedham, who scored a free throw with 11 seconds left to play to give the Cougars a two-point edge, had 30 points on the night.
The game opened with Post jumping out to a 12-2 lead, capped off with a Monique Chance (13 points, 6 rebounds) lay-up, and the Eagles would hold that 10 point lead until the 8:17 mark when Kate Schutz's (3 points, 3 rebounds) lay-up would begin the slow Cougar comeback.
The Eagles carried the lead into halftime, holding a 29-25 advantage, but with 11:38 remaining in the game, Leedham hit a three-pointer that would give Caldwell a lead that they wouldn't give back. They stretched the lead to as wide as 10 off a Leedham trey with 9:02 remaining, but the Eagles continued to fight until the end. Chance hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds remaining that would cut the Caldwell lead to 1, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get for the rest of the night.
The Eagles had a well balanced offense with four players scoring in the double digits, led by Aubrey Latham who had 22 on the night. Other notables included Liz Johnson (14 points, 6 rebounds) and Mallorie Michalak (10 points, 3 steals).
Post plays again on Thursday as they host Goldey-Beacom College in the WBCA Pink Zone Event. Tip-off is slated for 6pm.
