Post Defeats Stonehill 73-65 In Home Opener

Eagles Improve to 2-3 on the Season



WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team defeated Northeast-10 foe Stonehill 73-65 in its home opener on Sunday afternoon. Three Eagles finished in double figures led by freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) with 15 points.
 
Things did not start how the Eagles wanted as they quickly fell behind 13-2 as the Skyhawks quickly made three from distance early on. Post chipped away at the lead over the next 10 minutes with a 13-2 run of its own to take a 19-18 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half. Junior Nick Lawson (Woodbury, N.J.) scored five points during the run.
 
The teams battled over the final minutes of the first half with neither team pulling ahead by more than three points. Mareno hit two free-throws late in the half and the Eagles took a 29-28 lead into the break.
 
Senior Nardie Bogues (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Brandt Voiles (Byron, Ill.) each from distance as part of an 11-2 Post run to begin the second half, giving the Eagles a 40-30 advantage. Daniel Brix scored 10 straight points to tie the game and Stonehill pulled in front 48-42 with 9:43 left.
 
Freshman Malik Howze (Detroit, Mich.) tied the game 50-50 with a three-pointer. After two free-throws by the Skyhawks, the Eagles drained threes on their next three possessions capped by a shot from freshman Travis Flagg (Queens, N.Y.) as Post pulled in front for good at 59-52 with 4:26 remaining.
 
Stonehill cut the lead to six late, but the Eagles went 10-for-10 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the victory.
 
Bogues finished with 12 points and four assists. Flagg was 3-for-3 from distance and scored 10 points. Mareno and freshman Joseph Lockwood (London, England) each grabbed a team-high nine boards.
 
Post held a 44-33 advantage on the glass. Ryan Logan led the Skyhawks with 21 points. The Eagles held Stonehill's leading scorer Carter Smith to just four points on the day.
 
The Eagles will be back in action at home on Wednesday night as they welcome Felician to the Drubner Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
