WILMINGTON, Del. – The Post University men's basketball team opened the second half on a 29-9 run to turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a 13-point advantage as it defeated Goldey-Beacom 76-72 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at the Jones Center on Saturday afternoon. Junior
Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) scored a game-high 25 points, and it marked the third time this season he notched at least 25 points.
Krischer scored 20 points in the second half and for the game he shot 50 percent from the field (9-for-18) and the same percentage from distance (7-for-14). Classmate
Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) added 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Senior
Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) chipped in seven points, seven rebounds and a game-high eight assists.
During the second half run, which spanned the opening 9:10 of the second half, the Eagles tied the score at 40-40 with 16:02 to go after junior
Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) split a pair of foul shots. Post (12-8, 8-5 CACC) took the lead for good at the 14:35 mark when Krischer hit a triple in transition. His three-pointer opened a stretch of eight straight points by the Port Jefferson, N.Y., native. Cummings closed the run with baskets on consecutive possessions. '
In the final four minutes, Goldey-Beacom (5-14, 2-9 CACC) cut a 10-point deficit, 69-59, to just three points, 72-69, with 1:22 remaining. The Lightning netted three straight baskets, but the Eagles did not allow the hosts any closer. Wilcox went 4-for-6 at the free throw line to secure the victory for Post.
The Eagles opened the contest with a 7-2 run over a span of 2:30. Krischer netted the first points of the game for either team with a triple at the 19:20 mark. Classmates
Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) and
Travis Carbajal (Oklahoma City, Okla.) capped the spurt with a jumper and a layup, respectively. However, Goldey-Beacom responded with a 9-0 spurt of its own to take an 11-7 lead with 14:05 to play in the first period.
After the Lightning opened up a six-point margin, 24-18, on a Marcus Porter layup with 7:08 to play in the half, Krischer and Wilcox hit layups on back-to-back possessions to pull the Eagles within two, 24-22, with 6:21 remaining before intermission.
Goldey-Beacom grew its lead back to six, two more times in the final 5:10 of the first half. It took the largest margin of the half into the locker room after a Kyle Steinbergin triple with three seconds to play in the half. The Lightning led 33-26 at the break.
For the game, Post shot 50 percent from the field (27-for-54), which included a 61.5 percent clip in the second stanza. Goldey-Beacom was limited to just 38.5 percent shooting (25-for-65). The Eagles netted 19 points on 18 Goldey-Beacom turnovers. Individually, Marcus Porter led the Lightning with 18 points.
The win for Post snapped a three-game losing streak in the head-to-head series with Goldey-Beacom. The Eagles improved to 11-1 when they turn in 70 points as a team. Individually, Krischer notched his fifth 20-point performance of the season, which leads the team.
The Eagles will wrap up a two-game road trip on Tuesday, Jan. 29, when they travel to Felician for a CACC contest. Game time is set for 8 p.m. Post will aim for the season sweep of Felician after it won the first meeting 94-70 at the Drubner Center on Dec. 19.
